Hi Guys

i need to replace the rear tyres on my car and struggling to find any in the original size or anything close on various internet suppliers. Currently all four are Toyo Proxis t1r, not too fussed about make as will probably change all four.

What size have others used on their cars or have you got this size from somewhere?

thanks

Camskill have them. I have R888 in that size, 4 of them that I haven't used yet, originally bought through the suppliers to CSCC. If you want them we could do a deal but there a bit extreme compared to T1-R.

Yeah it's a choice between the conti's and toyo's if you wish to keep all 4 corners the same. I just replaced my Toyo's with more Toyo's. The rears from Camskill at £91 each and got the fronts on ebay for £57 quid each which was a bargain. Change out of £300 and would have been nearer £500 for Conti's. The Conti's are a bit better in the wet, but not £200 quid better imo. However you pays your money etc.!

If this is a track car, you'll find a lot of benefit in track spec tyres - like the 888's. I'd also recommend the Yoko AD08 as a great halfway house. Full 8mm tread, decent wet performance, reasonable price and performs like a track tyre in the dry. You can only get 225 width in 16 or 17 but that's more than enough for an S2.

I'm intrigued that tyre size for a 944S2 on 16's is 245/45, on both my 968's on 16's the tyres were/are 205/55 front and 225/50 rear. I put Goodyear Efficientgrips on the rears last September and am awaiting the same for the fronts to arrive (thanks to Ebay's 20% off code the other day!! £40 each delivered, local fitter will charge me £10 each to fit/balance). FYI I've never taken my cars on track, your S2 looks track focussed which may explain the wider tyres.

It isn't Chris, its 205/55 & 225/50.

Id opt for 225s all round. Porsche have fitted 245/45 on 8" and 225 on 7", but 4x8" with 225/50 would be ideal.

I've found running on various tracks (inc. Nurburgring & Spa) that 225/50 on 8" all round or 7.5" CS' at the front works well and gives a good balanced set up.

It does but I liked the feel of the car on track with 245x45-16 on the back so fancied trying em all round or going for a split setup with 225 up front. Haven't used the blooming things which is even more daft.

Hi

Not 100% sure on my rim width, think they are 7 and 8", but they are not 944 rims, they are off a 993 and I run wide spacers at the rear. I like the way the car handles so keen to keep with what I know. I have tried the 888's and they are great in the dry but not for me in the wet.

I phoned a few places locally and have managed to get a set of four t1r's fitted for £340 which is ok, only issue being is that the tyre centre called back shortly after to say both rears are on back order, supposedly to arrive next week. As I am in no real hurry I have stuck with it for now. Failing that think I will go with the conti.

i tried mytyres, and they came up with no stock in my size, maybe I selected the wrong option or something, as you found the conti' son there.

interesting to see others views on the widths though. This is maybe something I will have a play around with. I friend who runs E36 M3's swears by the same width back and front, it's not something that I have ever thought about. Will check my rim width and have a look around for a spare set.

thanks

I use 225/45/17 all round on my S2. 8J ET40 wheels. Square setup worked well on trackdays for the turbo too (and the Boxster).

My old S2 track beastie runs on 16 x 8 D90's c/w Hankook 225 /50 ZR16's. They seem to grip well in the dry but I have not used them in the wet ...... so far.

German performance cars (Porsche, BMW, Mercedes) often seem to err on the side of caution by having more rubber at the back then the front, thereby ensuring that RWD cars will tend to understeer rather than oversteer - the later being more 'safe' for joe public rather than hair oversteer
