24K vs 12K service

Hi,

Can someone tell me what is done for a 24,000 mile service compared to a 12,000 mile service?

Thanks.

According to my (German) Service Book it only calls for an initial service at 3-4000Km and then a general service every 20,000Km. There appears no distinction for shorter intervals.

I think you'll find that service levels seem to vary with the organisation carrying it out. I know, for instance, that J Z Machtech will give prices for 6K, 12K and 24K services and, from what I gather these constitute an oil change (6K), the standard service minus the tappet adjustment (12K) and the full works (24K). I'm sure if you ask JZM (or whoever you choose to use) you'll get a detailed breakdown of what they propose at each level.

The reason the tappet adjustment is separated out is that it seems that it's not really needed every 12K miles and it's very time and resource consuming for the garage since they have to warm up the engine for the oil change and let it cool down for the exhaust removal and tappet adjustment and then put it all back together. It just takes a lot of workshop space to leave a car for so long just cooling down - occupying space that could be used more productively for another car they CAN work on.

I'm not trying to justify their charges - I'm just making an observation, but it seems to make sense.

Hi,

Mines having a 24k as we speak so hopefully will be able to tell you sson. I know the 24k includes gearbox oil. Trying the SWEPCO stuff if anyones interested.

Zentrum in Notts also do 6k, 12k and 24k but confuse matters by calling the 6k an annual service. Pretty sure the service book listed what was done at what mileage but havent got it on me (useful I know)

I look forward to hearing back from you also.

Thanks for the replies. I got the following from JZM..........

[blockquote]
964 services.[/blockquote]
[blockquote]
12k
Carry out full check over, brakes, lights, electrics, locks, switches, wheels, tyres, chassis, suspension, steering, measure wear in tyres and brakes and report to customer.
Renew oil and filter, air filter, screen wash fluid, check and top up gear oil, check and top up all levels, re-set tyre pressures, check computer and carry out system adaption, grease, lubricate and road test.

24k
Carry out full check over, brakes, lights, electrics, locks, switches, wheels, tyres, chassis, suspension, steering, measure wear in tyres and brakes and report to customer.
Renew oil and filter, air filter, pollen filters, screen wash fluid, spark plugs, remove rear exhaust box and cat exhaust, remove all rocker covers and re-set valve clearance, fit back covers with new gaskets. Check and top up gear oil, check and top up all levels, re-set tyre pressures, check computer and carry out system adaption, grease, lubricate and road test.

That was pretty much what I expected. It's obvious that the spark plugs would get done at the same time as the valve clearances since the same dismantling is relevant to both issues. I was pretty sure that NONE of the services automatically includes a change of oil in the diffs or gearbox - just a topping up. I know JZM offer a separate "gearbox service" which involves very little other than a oil change for the gearbox.

Factory recommendation is both spark plugs and valve clearances at 12,000 not 24,000.

From the service manual with the car it gives

6K service : no such thing for the 964.
12K service : everything described in the posts above.
24K service : 12K plus change fuel filter, automatic transmision fluid
48K service : 24K plus manual transmission oil, drive axles oil (manual and automatic)

Ian.

If I was only doing 6K a year I would probably alternate between annual oil and filter change and 12K service (with plugs and tappets).

Hi,

Had a 24k done and cost £390 + VAT. As per previous responses, only difference in the maintenance manual appears to be a fuel filter at 24k otherwise a same as a 12k.

Disappointed with the Swepso stuff for the gearbox- guess I was hoping for a 'cure all'. Gear oil change recommended at 48k service, but better to do it now if unsrue what previous services have included.

I'd have the all singing and dancing service if buying a new car. Bought mine from Norhtway!

That sounds like an excellent price. I've been getting quotes around £550 + VAT for a 12K (ie. without fuel filter) service.

Any idea what a clutch replacement costs? Mine may be on it's last legs.

To get a good starting point for any maintenance job it's worth looking at the J Z Machtech web site. They have menu pricing for most jobs and whilst I'm not saying that's all there is to it - you may get better prices elsewhere - it will get you in the right ball park.

Have a look http://www.jzmachtech.com/shells/service_index.php?porsche=964&model=964%20C4&engine=3.6&year=1990 and make sure you select the right model/year etc and it will list all the jobs and the prices.
