Newer 996' s have 285/30 18 tyres if upgraded, while older cars have 265/35 18' s I believe.
I need new tyres on the back & was wondering should I keep it at 265 or go to 285 ?

Obviously cost is more but any other thought....or does it really not matter ?

Any comments welcome.

thanks

Julian.

Well the tyres on the car are 295' s - which I think is the wrong size so I either drop to 285' s which the rims can accomodate or go to 265' s which I think the wheels will be too big for I guess - so might need to change the wheels too then.

I guess its OK to have 285' s on the rear - even though this was the 18" tyre size for the later 996' s ?

Whatever your choice of tyre getting a make with a slight lip to protect the alloy can more then pay for iteslf in refurbing the alloy should you have an encounter with a kerb.

Also if you go for narrower tyres, then what the wheel currently has, you sometimes risk having a wheel whereby the tyre wall strecthes slightly back as opposed to being flush with the alloy. Very hard to explain but I hope you get the idea. The result is an ill fitting look tyre and maybe even a safety issue since the tyre wall needs some flex when taking corners etc which is compromised by the fact that its stretched onto a bigger alloy.

Personally I think wider tyres do look nice but it the rubber your buy that will determine how the car responds into corners and braking at fast speeds. Even if the tyre is slightly narrower but more ' stickier' - it will feel much better to drive. Question is what tyre? I would recommend Dunlop SP' s and Goodyear.
