26mm rear torsion bar - 3.2 carrera 1984

Hi,

Does anyone know where I can get hold of a 26mm rear torsion bar to be fitted onto 3.2 carrera 1984?? I think the 26mm come from the Turbo's, but not 100%.

My local OPC have said they'll take a few weeks to get from Germany, but I need them sooner.

Any info much appriecated.

Cheers

You can get them shipped from Pelican in the US. USPS airfreight usually works out about 5-7 days.

Elephant Racing will supply Sander Engineering bars in a similar time frame. Sanders are IMHO the best quality you can get.

Cheers for the info. I called Pelican, but unfortunately they have no stock either [:(] seems to be an international shortage off them.

Guess I'll have to wait for Porsche to make another batch.

Worth asking Pelican to check with Sander Engineering. They are close by geographically. Or try Chuck Moreland at Elephant Racing - he is a super helpful guy.

I just ordered yesterday a set of 26mm torsion bars from Official Porsche Dealer Bournemouth, I asked for 83 Turbo bars that I will fit to my 83 SC, the price was ÂŁ110 plus VAT which is chaper than most independant quotes.

yes the fronts will be standard but will be fitting 22mm front and 21mm rear torsion bars at the same time, Also fitting some revised Bilsteins, currently on HD's front and rear but want to revalve to clubsport specs if I can find the bump and rebound settings?

Bruce

I'm confused Bruce I think there is a typo somewhere in the posts, torsion bars have become anti-roll bars or vice-versa.

Should be a nice set-up. I would try the HDs as they are for a while. I know I should theoretically have much stiffer damping on my car but the HDs have worked pretty well with torsion bars much stiffer than yours.

Bilstein Heavy Duty shocks. The other options are Bilstein Sports (IIRC they are stiffer in bump but the same in rebound???) or custom valved based on weight, spring rate and intended use.

If I was to change from HDs, I would seriously consider Leda remote reservoir rather than another flavour of Bilstein - it doesn't cost that much more.

sorry ,yes I did mean 22mm and 21mm anti roll bars, not torsion bars. I will be fitting the total package over the winter ready for next years track day fun! so it will be some time before I can give any feedback.

Interested to note that Richard found HD's ok, I find the whole car a little underdamped on the circuit even with std torsion bars, however the car is fine for the road as it is. I think it would benefit from stiffer shocks even on the standard bars for track days as it takes some time to get the car settled for braking and turn in.

The 26 mm torsion bars are an attempt to increase oversteer/ reduce understeer and the anti roll bars to stop body roll so the car will accomodate R compound tyres without "rolling off the tyre".

I have changed my rear torsion bars to 30mm on the rear and it handles very well both on the track and the road.My car is clubsport and I have recently overhauled the entire suspension and torsion bars. I will check in the garage tommorow to see if the ones I took off are 26mm.

If they were std t-bars, then they are not 26mm. Only the turbo came with 26s.

Bruce, conventional wisdom would say you should run Sport rears and HD fronts. My only thought was to try the HDs all round and see what you think, given you already have them. I don't think its better than Sport/HD, I just think it works better than I expected. It is also easy to change the rear shocks without taking the suspension apart as only access to the top nut is a little tight, so you can always change them later. If you are wedded to Bilstein then I would get the rears custom valved for your weight, spring rate etc rather than buy Sports which like HDs are a compromise - just a slightly different compromise. Price on the revalve is much like buying new Sports and selling the HDs.

I still think Ledas are worth a look or if you feel really flush then Motons.

Richard you say only on the turbos... Does this include turbo bodied cars like mine? I understood my car ran with turbo suspension and presumed this includes the torsion bars. Am I correct? Cheers

Kris

Don't know Kris. It's no doubt in Tony Corlett's book though. Without the extra weight and the more rearwards location of the turbo engine it may be unnecessary. I think when they talk about the Supersports having "Turbo suspension" most people are meaning the 930 trailing arms and pick up points, but I might be wrong.

Richard, I agree I am definatly nervous about just fitting bilstein sports and hoping for the best, I believe that there is a specific Club Sport shock as fitted to the carrera CS model that may do the trick when fitted front and rear, however I cannot find any comparative info on bump/rebound so that I can get the HD's revalved, do you have any leads or info as a search shows up nothing on this or the pelican board that I can find ?

thanks

Bruce

Thanks Richard. I'll have to do some more searching and find out. Those Leda dampers sound very interesting indeed! I wonder if Ohlins do anything for our cars..........

Bruce talk to Steve Winter at Jaz or Richard Tuthill and when you get the shocks have then revalved for weight and the type of use your putting them to. When I put on my new Bilstein sports along with a total suspension refurb I'm getting them supplied ready valved to suit where I drive mostly.
