3.0 8v turbo

A 3.0 8v turbo seems quite a rare engine in the UK these days, has anyone here driven one for a reasonable distance, let alone owned one. A drive along a twisty B road the other day with plenty of gear changes, got me thinking that the car would be much nicer if meaningful acceleration started from nearer to 2k rpm than 3k.

Not a 3.0 but I have been a passenger on track in a 2.8 long stroke 951, Andrew Sweetenham's car to be precise. That car was fun, blitzed everything one PCGB session at Castle Coombe circuit many moons ago with its 422bhp. Personally I prefer the drive of the 8v, more so when a 2.5. Plenty of low down torque with very good response, a lively engine. 16v needs too much rpm for my style of driving, but then I do drive like an old man these days...🤣

My spare 8v head appears to be from one of Andrew's cars, still has a luggage label attached with "Andrew Sweetenham" on it... I also picked up a 2.7 head up at the same time (no valves though). Unfortunately, there is a large gouge across the sealing surface of the 8v 2.5 head, not sure if it has had any "work" done on it but it does have a full set of valves.

It may be a fallacy that 16v engines produce less torque than the 8v versions. With first mk2 16v Golfs having cam profiles to make full advantage of the 4 valve heads. Are 2 valve heads even used in performance cars today?

Perhaps, but then so is 3.0 being better than 2.5.....saw a post last week of a well sorted 2.5 951 on the rollers, she made over 800bhp...not sure how many valves though....she sounded great, nice even engine which didn't sound as if she was under any strain at WOT. Clearly a good build.
 
As I've said before Pete, I've got everything in the garage to build a 3.0 8v. But these engines are a bit like you and me, old designs :LOL:. So I wouldn't be looking to reinvent the wheel if I ever had to rebuild it.

3.0 or 2.5, 8v or 16v...they are good engines and when it comes to Porsche, the older designs are best...well over engineered and built to last.

I think the 2.7/3.0 block is an improved design, and the 2.7 head has bigger inlet ports and inlet valves. Whether the extra stroke of the 3.0 crank has any downsides on a road engine, I doubt it. I wonder what happened to the 3.0 turbo Baz Hart built years ago?

Did that not go to Simon off TIPEC forum and then to our own Eldavo? Or have I got that wrong..........

Baz didn't get around to building the 16 valve engine with all the special parts, that Simon later bought. The 8v engine was earlier, and more basic, built with skimmed 968 pistons and standard rods and turbo I think. Eldavo bought his 16 valve engine from Simon.
 
I drove the 3.0 8v that Baz Hart built around Oulton Park on a track day. It was very relaxed, very easy to drive with lots of low down punch compared to the standard car. I reckon it would be an excellent B road blaster as you could probably just leave it in 3rd or 4th and just blast out of the corners without having to constantly change up or down gear.

Yes it was simply an exercise to show you could easily make a 3.0 engine by bolting together existing blocks, head and pistons from other cars in the 944 range and then drop it into a car with standard AFM, boost, turbo, exhaust etc. It worked a treat and, was significantly faster than a standard 2.5 and was a good base for whoever bought it to go further if they wanted.
 
Do you know what's happened to the JMG 3.2 944 turbos? A few years back I heard one had been left behind when the owner went to Australia.
 
Seems a bit odd to me, that owners that have to rebuild their 2.5 engine haven't sourced a 2.7 engine and 3.0 crank, and rebuilt that instead. Most of the external 2.5 parts bolt straight on, and aside from the engine code and a small bolt on the head, it would look pretty much the same.
