3.2 Anniversary

Hello... newbie here.

I have seen a relatively low mileage 3.2 Anniversary offered for sale by Cridfords. It seems about right on price (just a whisker under £16k)....

...does anyone know the car, or have any words of wisdom.

I have recently come out of a string of Lotus Elises and want something I can use daily with a little more practicality than the Elise. I absolutely adore the 964, but have been warned off them by numerous experienced Porsche owners in favour of the last 3.2's with G50 gearboxes.

I'm in your hands.

cheers

Alex

HI
I have the anniversary cabrio - they are great cars and quite rare only 30 coupes in the UK, even less targas and cabs.
They all came with additional options as stnd such as short shift gear change (same as a CS) silk/wool carpets diamond blue colour + coded fuchs ruffled leather seats (cw Ferry Porsche signature stitched on front head rests) - other included options were elec seats/sunroof/and others.
They are not worth a big premium over a stnd 3.2 but all the same will appreciate more over time I would have thoughht due to the rarity of the car.
However - be sure that the car is ok before buying - as the other poster says the back bumper looks iffy to say the least. But if thats all Im sure that the garage would sort that.
Im afraid I have no experience with cridfords - but the price is about right compared to other anniversary cars that have sold recently. (the last I saw as a coupe went for 23,000 euros - but it was mint).
Good luck with the search and be sure to post once you have got your car!

i would love a club sport (in white with red decals), but i think that might be stretching my luck too far.

i just want something that is mechanically and cosmetically sound... something that if i am religious about servicing etc, i should be able to run without having to fork out thousands each month.

originally i wanted a 964 (i think the shape is the prettiest), but have been put off these on account of electrical gremlins etc. i have also noted that if i upped my budget to £20k, i would be knocking on the door of the some of the cheaper 993's, but i'm reluctant to buy the 'cheapest' of anything, as it seldoms works out that way.

basically, i have always lusted after a 911, have been tied up in elises for some time, and have a final opportunity (pre kids) to have another silly car... at least with a 911, i can put a babyseat in the back and maybe a set of roof bars to carry around my bikes (all of which is a no-no in a lotus)

Whilst I realise I won't get a sympathetic hearing here, it's a shame you should be so easily scared off a 964. Undoubtedly more refined than a 3.2 with all the advantages of decent heating, ABS brakes, power steering and better suspension - shall I go on??

Without a doubt, the added complexity of some of the electronics does add to the fun sometimes, but it's not at all a major issue. In fact, the majority of the systems on the 964 are pretty bullet-proof - many of the problems are often assumed to be complicated and, in the end, turn out to be not so.

The sort of budget you are contemplating will get you a really good 964 - and I'm convinced you will be glad of it. If you don't it will always niggle you that you didn't do it!!!

Regards

Dave

what sort of money would i be looking at for a 3.2 club sport if one was to come up?.... ideally not with moon mileage...

does anyone know about the 1979 SC with 911classic which has been turned into a 964 replica complete with 3.6 litre engine and G50 gearbox?

looks like an awesome potential track car...

it's up for nigh on £20k... good or bad?

It all depends how you look at it! Some could view it as the best of both worlds and some the opposite! In any event, I would judge that any "hybrid" is intrinsically worth less than either of the base models - so 20 grand looks very steep to me.

If you are undecided on a 964 versus a 3.2 Carrera, I would strongly recommend that you go and drive an example of each, mainly because they are quite different animals to drive.
My personal preference is very much for the 3.2 Carrera. This originates from having a 1986 3.2 Carrera about 10years ago and the local dealer then offered me a 964 as my next obvious choice. He gave me keys and I drove the 964 for a day. By all accounts, it was a 'better' car than my Carrera - more refined/ lighter steering/ABS/etc. but I was unimpressed, mainly because I thought it felt more Sierra (I also had an XR4 at the time) than 'Porsche'. When I came to buy another Porsche recently, I knew that only a 3.2 Carrera would give me the smile I was looking for - but, as I say, this is a personal thing and only you can choose after trying both. Believe me, they are different!

cheers for the comments.

ultimately, i don't need something super refined or super quick... i am used to uncomfortable (i had a sva elise sport 160 which was featured on the front of classic cars magazine earlier last year), but i always try to go for something a little 'special'.

i suppose the ideal 911 for me would be something that is quite raw, quite rewarding to drive (not necessarily super fast), uber-reliable (provided i buy the right one in the first place!), not too hideous in terms of running costs and in a super ideal world... painted in a silly colour (ie. lime green or similar).

not much to ask i know... but i guess i'm not in a hurry to buy...

i hope i do find something, otherwise i'll end up back in the lotus fold (for a fourth time!) with something like a honda/audi transplant car... great for leaving ferrari enzo's in the dust!
