3.2 Carrera Location of engine cooling fan switch

Anyone know where it is? Bentley manual says crankcase vent cover at rear of engine which I guess should make it easy to find but I' ll be Bu****ed if I can find t.

Does anyone know???????
 
Steve - not sure what component you mean - my engine cooling fan is big and red and belt driven!! - Seriously what is the full title of the component you' re looking for - if I don' t know I can look it up for you

I must admit that I wondered what he meant, but didn' t want to get technical like you !

Mind you, your engine compartment looks rather clean, I have never seen a painted fan before. Puts mine to shame - ah well, I' ll just have to drive it instead.
 
OK, Looks like my title was cut short. It' s the electric engine cooling blower fan that is located front left of the engine and operates when

The ignition is on
Car is stationary.
And this mysterious temp switch located in the fan cowling is switched (i.e. hot!)

It' s this switch location I' m after (connected to Pin 10 of the relay if my memory serves me correct). I had the altrenator / blower fan off at the weekend and couldn' t see it anywhere on that part of the cowling.

Its a 1989 3.2 Sport that I have.

Any ideas??

I have an 89 Sport and the only time my electric blower fan (located on top of and to the left of the engine in the picture above - back plastic shroud with a white sticker on it) comes on is when I turn the heating on. It is usually referred to as the engine mounted heater blower - or something similar. I understand that this blower contributes a little to engine cooling but judging by the fairly pitiful output it has (in terms of volume of air moved) I doubt it does a lot. I have never heard it come on when stationary or at any other time other than at my bidding.

As you probably know, the main cooling is (a) by air via the engine blower fan (big red fan in the picture) and (b) by oil via (mainly) the engine mounted cooler and the front rhs fender mounted cooler (and brass lines running thereto) which is thermostatically controlled and has a further thermostatically controlled fan. The engine must be real hot before the thermostat allows oil to flow to the front cooler and must be damn hot before the fan starts to blow air thru the front cooler. Perhaps this is what you are thinking of?

You' ll find if you look through the various manuals that the heating fan should come on when the ignition is turned on, plus when the heater is switched on. I believe there was some logic behind this as the rear left cylinder runs hotter than the rest (just as in VW air-cooled). I think Porsche should have made this fan thermostatic, so it could come on when the motor was hot and at rest; just like a water cooled motor with electric fan and radiator. (live always) There' s also a chance their logic was to move air out of the engine comparment- more suitable for cars in hot climates.
There is a thread on Pelican or Rennlist discussing the temperatures under the engine lid; quite amazing how hot the area around the mtr becomes.
Not all is as it would seem.
