3.2 Induction

Hello All,

Having owned my new toy for about three months now I have spoken to many people both memebers and non members who recommend I replace the standard panel intake filter with a cone type induction kit, any views?

I'd leave the original on - it has a bigger surface area - filter.
If you really need to mess with it - drill 3 holes in the bottom of the lid on the air cleaner box - about 30mm diameter.
Spend your money on changing the oil more often - the mtr will love you.[;)]
 
I got a cone filter, Looks nice in green. No discernible change in performance or noise or mpg. Just looks good, that's all. Waste of £30-50
 
The restriction is not the filter, its the flapper style airflow meter. Drill some holes and enjoy the increased sound or buy the cone filter and enjoy the way it looks but do not expect any hp gains.

I can post a picture of the modified airbox if you want but the aim is to replicate the Fabspeed Cup airbox for a fraction of the price - do a search for Fabspeed and you will see.

I drilled holes in the stock air box and replaced the paper filter with a K&N filter. This sounded great - no hp gains to report of, just incresed induction noise.

I have since fitted a cone filter (bought from essential styling) the induction noise is no better than the above mod. I fitted a sports pre silencer at the same time and have a definate increase in bhp although I cannot confirm it was from the cone filter (I think the cone was the icing on the cake for the other mods I have done)

IMHO drill lots of large diameter holes in your airbox - you will feel like you are going faster due to the increased noise.
 
one negative side is that you may not be able to check the oil without the car cutting out after fitting a K+N. My car has just been rebuilt and it still does it, I am told by the mechanic that this can be a side-effect of cone-filters fitted to the 3.2
 
Steve get rid of your K&N unless you are prepared to continually oil it. The stock paper element is the best thing for road use and longevity. K&N filters are more suited to a high maintenance track car.

Have read your post and the replies with interest - I hope to pick up my own 3.2 later this month ('88 Targa) The BIG question - have you followed the suggestions and got busy drilling holes in the airbox?? And are you happy with the result like the rest of the guys??
 
Thanks for all the advice chaps. I still haven't decided what to do, I was looking into it for no other reason than the original filter needs changing. Although I must admit the thought of more noise and power is tempting!

40PAW - I'll let you know what I do in the end, hope you enjoy your 3.2, it's without a doubt the best thing I've ever bought - wish I'd done it years ago!

Yes, I cut the whole side out of mine (kind of like the Fabspeed cup airboxs that retail for some crazy amount of cash), and it sounds great on full throttle past about 4500rpm, but it makes zero difference to performance. Try taking the cover off your airbox and running a piece of duct tape over the filter to hold it in place then drive round the block - you will get the same sound. If you like, modify it, if not put the cover back on.

Thanks everyone. I've decidied to stay with the original design and just I've got a new panel filter (as the old one was ripped?).
Thanks for the advice Richard I've tried it with the air box removed and the filter taped in - what a noise and at no cost at al!l - saving it for special occasions though.
