3.2 running costs

Hi there,

Before I take the plunge into 3.2 ownership I'm trying to get an idea of prices for certain jobs just in case 'the worst should happen' Hopefully taking on board the advice posted here I should be able to get a car in good condition and avoid at least some of the expensive stuff. Anyway if anyone could give me an idea of price for the following jobs it would be much appreciated. I don't want my dream car to turn into an expensive nightmare !!

1. Top end rebuild
2. gearbox rebuild
3. Clutch.
4. Exhaust (excluding heat exchangers)
5. Heat exchangers
6. Air flow sensor
7. Front discs and pads.
8. Rear discs and pads.

Any other expensive items I've missed?

Thanks and all the best.

Martin.

I am a relatively new owner, but can answer:

3. Clutch: approx. £700 fitted.

To an extent costs will depend on whether the jobs are tackled in isolation or whether they are combined. For example, each of a top end rebuild, clutch change and gearbox repairs require removal of the engine/box so if you had all three done at the same time you would save yourself the labour cost of two engine removal/refittings. Having said that I suggest the gearbox recon would cost a minimum of £1,000 and the top end £1,500 - £2,000. Costs will vary depending on the labour charge of your specialist and the amount of parts required. Gearbox parts can be very expensive!!

As to new heat exchangers, a popular mod. is to fit the stainless steel ones (aka SSIs), these ones will need some extra pipes & parts so earmark around £1,200 for that lot. Pattern mild steel replacements can be obtained at much cheaper prices, you will almost certainly need a new cross over pipe and maybe a side and rear boxes too.
