hi Guys thinking of having a dabble with one of these cope or a targa ,
Major pitfalls to avoid would be good .
Also read a lot about actual uk numbers imported with wide ranging numbers
quoted .I guess one of you will have the right numbers!.
Thanks

There's lots of information on the Impact Bumpers, Pelican and Rennlist forums. These cars are pretty much mechanically bullet proof, most will need a top end rebuild at some point but this depends on usage and maintenance not mileage. Rust is the big one to look out for, can be expensive to put right so get it inspected by a knowledgeable Porsche expert like Peter Morgan as an example. Good hunting

The advice is the same as with any of the air cooled cars, rust really is the wallet breaker. Usual areas, b-pillars, kidney bowls, sills, scuttle, inner wings. Generally the rust only goes one way, and its inside out. They are quite reasonable to run with general servicing and the odd parts.

Thanks Guys , from what I have read I gathered the dreaded moth would be the major issue along with the valve guide issues . Will get an expert to go over anything I fancy before parting with the dosh . thx Mike

Hi The preference seems to be G50 gearbox not the 915 , I suppose its like anything else its what you get used to ?

Mike, you are most welcome to come over and have a look at mine, I can talk you through the points of interest and what you should be looking for etc. I have never driving a 915 but, I believe a well sorted 915 is just as good as a G50, I certainly don't hear complaints from friends with them. They key really is overall condition rather than specific spec. If you hold out for a specific spec then you will struggle to get exactly what you want. But there should be plenty of G50s about.

I've driven many 915's and only one G50 - mine, which has done 112,000 miles. There is no comparison, the G50 is a pleasure to use whereas the 915's are at best 'interesting' and at worst, a total pain. There are things that can be done to improve a 915, but the G50 is much better straight out of the box (excuse the pun) All my own opinion, of course and if you can get on with a 915, don't let it put you off an otherwise good car. Did anyone mention rust...?

Hi Mark, That's avery kind offer , I will send you an email and maybe we can fix something up

Absolutely, I know we have had email problems before so I will keep an eye out.

I was looking for a car with G50 as that is the box everyone seems to say is best. I bought a fabulous car with a fabulous 915 box that was far better than any G50 I had driven...enough said

And so goes the age-old argument that has divided passionate Impact Bumper 911 owners since 1987! Each 'box has it's supporters and I've declared my allegiance to the G50 many times - and I stick by that opinion. However, I would suggest to any prospective owner that they try both and decide which is best for him / her. BUT I repeat what I said earlier, DO NOT buy a car based on the gearbox type, the three most important things are condition, condition and condition. Buy well and you will defend your IB 911 to the hilt - good ones are wonderful cars

I've got the g50 in a supersport and it a wonderful car but not like any modern Porsche to drive. They are harder work but I've never had a problem with the gearbox. Or anything else. A super reliable car I've not moved it for one year to the next and it starts always first try. They are a beautiful looking usable classic. And apparently only 14 supersport targa were made. I'm in oxford if you want a look around and a spin in one.

There are a couple out there for sale at the mo, as others have said, rust is the problem, however mechanics are crucial as well. I bought mine a year ago, high mileage but reflected in purchase price. Eventually I took it in for the top end rebuild and ended up with a total strip down and rebuild pretty much new everything from crankshaft up!!! Absolute fortune, but money invested I suppose. I will say that it is an absolute dream to drive now, no more tapping, smoking and sluggish response. The engine looks and drives like brand new......anyway good luck, they are the best looking 911 off all time IMO!!!

Thankyou for the offer , I'm up in Yorkshire but I do venture south . Interesting about the numbers of each produced .Apparently detailed records were not kept. I'm looking forward to the search . Prices seem to vary from one extreme to another. I think they do look gooood.

As many have said already buy on condition the gearbox thing no big deal. I looked at many G50 915 type 911's in the end I bought a 87 MODEL 915 Box no problem needs to get warmed up a bit. I changed the oil as well that helps. You get use to it in no time, as with any other car . There will always be a G50 VS 915 box do let let it put you off a good 911. If you can buy one from a enthusiast, e.g. club member you know then they have a passion for the brand and car. Also hold some money back, for a big bill or two later on find one with the top end done already would be a bonus. A car with low miles does, not make it a better car I found that out myself. Goodluck

PCGB did a spread on the SSE with the model numbers produced in there monthly mag, I have it somewhere , Mike PS Great cars had mine coming up to 6 yrs never missed a beat .G50 one to go for / also best looking 911 ever made

I could not find or afford a SSE but found a 3.2 sport targa with a M30 pack and G50 box love it to death and use it ev ery day Rust is not an issue with my baby, but atop end overhaul done by me still cost £3500 including a new exhaust @ a knock down price. Sell her never!!!!! Paul .
