3.4 vs 2.7 running costs (real world)

I normally get an average of 25mpg in my S with good mix of driving. Obviously less if you have more fun and upto 30 if i'm going longer distance on the motorway.

Hi all
Going to look at a very well specced 56 plate S today, but unsure if i can really afford it, i don't do a lot of miles maybe 8k a year and most of that is urban, so i'm wondering do i push the boat out and take the hit on MPG or wait till a 2.7 comes along that i like.

Apart from increased insurance and tax, has anyone gone from a 2.7 to a 3.4 and found the running costs increase significantly?

My MPG is similar. Gets just above 30 on a long motorway run. If I was doing only 8k miles a year I wouldn't be worried about the mpg of the 2.7 vs the 3.4. The fuel cost difference can't be that much in sterling over that 8k miles (can it?) and the extra performance will be worth it. In fact, if you're buying a car like a Porsche, which is for 'driving' (IMHO) then perhaps you shouldn't worry too much about mpg at all [:D] That was not a comment with lack of concern for the environment. I do my bit! However, you're fuel costs will be more to do with how lead footed you are when you don't need to be (over that distance and just in terms of Cayman vs Cayman S). When i'm not pushing on my driving style is very different and you can see the difference on the trip computer's mpg display. That said, I think Porsche do have very good fuel economy compared to other marques, like Jaguar, Aston Martin and Maserati (just from the top of my head, not scientifically choosing direct comparisons for the Cayman), which I think is very commendable and part of the appeal for me.

over 8000 miles the difference in fuel costs will be about £3-400!!between a 2.7 and a 3.4 s. if you need any more information to confirm you "need"a 3.4 then just let me know[:D] if you feel the need to look after the planet dont worry-do as i do-get a bmw diesel sport and do 50mpg doing around 20k miles a yr -and have a laugh doing a few thou in a porsche[:)]
