3.6 Turbo Woes

[FONT=verdana,geneva"]Hoping someone can help. My brother in law in Bahrain has a spanking lovely silver 3.6 Turbo. Probably doesn't get used is much as it should/could (roads pretty limited there) which might account for the odd niggle he has to sort out.

He's asked for my help and seeking advice and comment on his recent turbo problem. Hoping someone can suggest options...

"I am having more problems with the Turbo 3.6 . After carrying out a major service I noticed that the turbo boost was kicking in a bit later, i.e. at a higher rpm, and power seemed less. Shortly after, a loud high pitched noise similar to a siren started coming out from the back. At this point I noticed that the turbo boost gauge was showing no boost at all.

I suspected that the turbo is the problem and now after taking it to the garage and opening the top of the turbo it appears that the blade inside has worn out and the metal residue which is like fine powder has found its way into the throttle body.

I am told now that the turbocharger has to be completely replaced although in some places, like the US, it is possible to repair it. I am wondering if you can check on this issue with your and if I have to buy a new turbo, the price."

If more info is needed I can go back and ask him..

these guys advertise a 964 turbo rebuild service but show only the 3.3 on their site. Maybe worth a bell?

gimme a call later - just stripping down the new HVAC unit I salvaged off the 964 targa last week - all works perfectly, just refurbishing the servos - kitchen table job :) the wife will kill me

 
Hi If the turbo is that bad the concern to me would be has debris from the turbo got into the engine! The cost could be far more than the turbo. Berny.

I guess a cursory inspection whipping off the cylinder heads might check for any 'ingestion' of Al filings/grindings(?)

Thing is, I recall his 3.6T only having about 20km from new on the clock and all in hot Bahrain. Why would the turbo bomb out on low miles?

If there was a change the engine had ingested a load of tiny metal fragments an oil change may show up these on the drain plug magnet - otherwise an engine drop.

 
I'm with Bernie, number one worry is whats ended in the engine!

Number one place to head is the 964T site on rennlist and you will find all you need their. (dont need to be a member)
 
The nice guys over at Rennlist forums have come back with a few pointers... Think it would be a good idea if I got some pics of any damage..

Wouldn't have thought any sand or similar would have gotten in there. Just seems unusual, but then I'm not there to see for myself.


 
Boost on my Impreza became very erratic earlier this year - sometimes car was really flat, other times good as new. This was accompanied by a lot louder 'boosting' noises. I assumed an air leek. Turned out the bearing in the turbo was failing and that was causing the spindle to sometimes run off centre. This damaged the cold side blades. Luckily the intercooler is very fine 'mesh' inside and I managed to reverse flush it and get lots of little bits of blades out. New turbo fitted from Turbo Dynamics (very good price). They also service/rebuild turbos. Their site only lists the 3.3 turbo though...
 
Excellent Ade. Thanks for the pointer. Just need to determine if it's the same turbo for the later 3.6. Will call them later..
