I was looking at a 964 3.8 RS Widebody today and was wandering what the N before RS means on the chassis plate?

3.8 RS
- Thread starter Steve Winstone
- Start date
Is it not just the year? What position was the N (how many characters from the start)?

If it is a proper 3.8 widebody it should be a P not an N.
Check out the chassis number sequences under 'technical data' heading.

Martin,
I'm not sure you are right on the 3.8 RS chassis numbers being divided into 2 sets like that... as I understood, the clubsports (of which there were only 7 LHD) are scattered thru the sequence... I know my car was one of these and it wore a number from your first sequence for example?
Could you point me to the source of your info on this? Would love to find out more.
Cheers
Rick

Hi Rick
I think you are correct about the 7 Clubsport versions being scattered through the sequence. It was just that 3.8 widebody was mentioned in the original post and, to my knowledge, all original widebody cars have a P in the chassis number to denote 1993 model year.
I have 16 on the database and all are/were widebodies. I can't remember offhand where i found the info but i will endeavour to re-find it for you. As soon as i do, i will post a link.

I was refering to the chassis number section on your website, I think the Clubsports were interspersed into the top set of chassis numbers which covered all road cars, while the second set was basically race cars (not road legal).
Also I'm not aware that there were this many versions of the RS 3.8... I think your choice was standard or clubsport with a chassis # ZPS 497... or RSR = race car = ZPS 496...
Would be interested if your experience with the database would agree with this?
Or if anyone has evidence to the contrary?
Cheers
Rick

To be perfectly honest i really don't know and can't for the life of me remember where i found the information. (But i'm still searching).
As far as my database goes, the earliest '3.8 Clubsport' i have is 6062 and the latest is 6104 (which i assume is the last car).
The earliest '3.8 Lightweight' i have is 7067 and the latest is 7112.
I assume the numbers run concurrently between them, but i'm not sure.
Please, someone, enlighten us!

The wonder of Porsche, does anybody really know ?
Porsche give out build numbers, but often allocate far more Vin numbers than actual builds.
For example, I'm told there were 500 allocated Vin numbers for 996GT3RS --- but only around 250 built ?
So we have the idea (with 130 ? in the UK) that they are reasonably common.
In reality, they MAY not be ...

On my travels i have obtained a copy of a letter from Jurgen Barth stating the following:
"I can confirm that Porsche AG manufactured the following number of cars for these vehicle types.
Carrera RS 3.8 (Street Version) 55 cars
Carrera RSR 3.8 (Racing Version) 51 cars"
Unfortunately no mention of chassis numbers though! Thought this might be of interest.
