Some years ago Autofarm converted a Cayman Gen1to 3.8 a register member may still have it.

He and it were on the 2015 Factory Tour and the 2013 one as well - it's a 3.7L and has a carbon fibre bonnet and rear hatch amongst other improvements - very nice too! The owner spends a lot of time out of the country in connection with his job in ship engineering.

Yes Ralph and I received an email from him a couple of days ago saying that he has just sold it to RPM Technik so if anyone is looking for a rather special Cayman which clocked 200MPH on the autobahn in April they should have it ready for sale soon. It would be good to have it back in the register and seen at the shows etc.

 
Hi all,

I'm the proud new owner of the Autofarm car. I've only had it a couple of weeks, so have not yet formed a full opinion of it - I need to get it on track to see what it can really do. It is certainly fast (more so than my 335bhp 964RS, and the 968 CS I sold to fund the purchase).

I have already started to take the modifications a bit further. I've fitted RSS lower arms and rear GT3 lower arms with RSS toe-links. I've also installed a new alcantara shifter and handbrake and Porsche Cup alcantara steering wheel.

The car will benefit from a little cosmetic tidying - the carbon panels aren't the best quality and the edges are looking a bit tatty in places, so I'm going to have them sprayed. I also intend to fit a half cage, so am grateful for the pictures of the Heigo installation I saw on another thread. The car has a harness bar, so I just need to work out if this will interfere with a cage installation, or whether to scrap it and go for the Heigo option incorporating a harness bar.

I probably wouldn't have chosen PASM, but I need to see how it feels on track before I can judge it properly, though I suspect I will end up fitting a passive, adjustable, damping of some sort.

At the time the car was in the magazines, the Volk TE37 wheels seemed to be a bit of a marmite choice and divided opinion. I remain unconvinced by them, but the problem is I can't tell what the offset on them is in order to find suitable alternatives. I have a feeling the big brakes on the car will have affected the wheel fitment, so I'm not sure the wheels are standard Cayman offset.

I will update more as I get to know the car.........

Hi Jamie, good choice and dare I say natural extension or progression with the 964RS. if you want a set of lightweight Turbo II 991 19" wheels in Carbon Wrap, which can be removed, I will be selling a used set of these very (new) expensive wheels soon .....

Looks like the car has a good home. On offsets, you could work from stock wheels offset as your datum point then use an offset calculator to determine what will fit. Try The Rennlist one..

The problem is that I don't know if the hubs themselves are in the stock position. I believe there are hub spacers on the car to adjust the offset for the brake discs. I think the only way to do it will be to measure the back space on the current wheels, then do some trial and error to see what might fit.

Fascinating.... I love the idea of putting a 3.8L in a Cayman.

Thats interesting that the Cayman box mated to the 991 engine with no mods?

 
Jaimie, What tyre size are you currently on? And what clearance do you have to the wheel arches, I would expect that the hubs have been moved out if as you say they have spacers and it may have been part of the conversion to have changed the drive shafts and as you say the arms have been changed they may well be longer than the originals so check tyre size as they are and then measure the depth of the wheels and the width, from that compare to a Porsche Wheel and you can see what the difference is.

 
Kevan, I'm running what I believe are the stock size tyres - 235/40/18 and 265/40/18. There is not much clearance on the wheel arches. The paperwork with the car does suggest there is a hub spacer somewhere, but it doesn't say whether front or rear. There are also some regular wheel shims on the rear which look to be c.5mm. Did I read somewhere that a 5mm spacer on the rear was a factory option ?

Lots to learn about these cars........

Jamie, if you google Cayman Cup, you will see a lot of information in this Race Series.

Jamie, the tyre sizes you have are the same width as the 19" tyres, 5mm spacers are acceptable as far as the factory are concerned on the standard set up and are often used to space the wheels out to give clearance on for the brake callipers particularly when using the 18" wheels., your best bet to compare wheels is to get hold of a standard front and rear Cayman S wheels and see how they compare, I would expect the fronts to be factory offset but the rears my be something else, but it will be apparent if you fit the wheels before you get the full weight on the tyres,
