3 angle valve job

Guest

New member
Hi

Does anyone out there know who does good 3 angle valve jobs? And what sort of price was it?

Cheers[8D]

I know a really good guy in the oxon/northants area - where are you based? He does heads for many different types of engine, including new minis, lots of VW stuff (inc all GTI Engineering's heads when they were in business), old BDA motors, etc, etc. I don't think he's done much porsche stuff, but it doesn't really matter.

He's a one man band, with nearly 30 years experience. His overheads are small, so his prices tend to be low.

Edited to add pics of work - VW golf heads

I'm based in Chiswick. Well the heads have been sent off. The bad news is that apparently one of the barrels may need to be skimmed and therefore they need to do all of them.

Now waiting for some kind of price indication and time frame. In the mean time I have to hire a car (bugger).

Cheers

Pics added above, in case anyone else is looking for a porting job.

Hope you're not doing it at dealer prices

Mike

No I won't be doing it at dealer prices. Bad news is the guy has gone on holiday so it's delayed the job being finished. So at this stage it is looking verymuch like the car will not be finished before Sept[:(] what with the machine shop being on holiday this week and my mechanic getting married and being away all of August.

Will keep you posted.

Cheers[8D]

If you get the chance, it would be good to see some pics of the work to compare. Are you having a porting job done too, or just the valve seats? To be honest I'm not sure how much there is to be gained from porting 911 heads, as I've never really looked one over. With the low compression ratio, I'd think there must be scope for more power from that alone, provided you can keep it cool enough.

Will try and get some pics. It won't be till next week though as the heads etc are still at the machine shop.

I'm speaking with them regarding doing some porting. It's all good.

Nothing new this week other than the injectors have been sent off for cleaning and testing. Hopefully they will not require replacing. I'll let you know.

Cheers

I spoke to my head man today. I didn't know this, but he tells me he used to do all the cylinder head work for Autofarm (valve guides and seats mostly), although they bought some kit to do it themselves now. It doesn't surprise me, that he's done Porsche stuff, as he's worked on most things in the last 30 years.

He reckons there's not much benefit to be had from porting 911 heads, as they're pretty well finished from the factory, but there might be the few horses to be had, and it's easy to do if the head's off for refurb.

I'm seeing him about some VW business this weekend, so let me know if you want rough prices, to compare with your other guy.

The Saga continues.
We sent the injectors off for testing etc. They have come back that they are all buggered and need to be replaced[:(]. Well at least they are not too expensive (cheaper to replace them then repair them).

At last the machine shop is back from holiday. However it looks like things will not be done in time for completion this month[:(]. So I'll be without the car all summer. The new expected date is Sep 2007 for completion.

The body has gone off to have the engine bay re-painted[:D]. So things are moving.

Will keep you up to date.
Cheers

My golf 16v needed injectors, and I bought genuine Bosch ones from ebay at £12.50 each (I see they're 16.50 now), which weren't the original VW item, but were close enough. From diagrams in the Bentley manual, they look very similar to 911 ones. Might be worth investigating.

Prior to the change I was having problems with starting the car due to leaking into the cylinders, and a judder on the overrun

Here's one very similar to what I bought - same seller as I used. Being listed for Ferraris and Mercs, they should flow enough for a 911, provided the thread on the end is the right size to fit the fuel pipe. I can lend you an old golf one if you want to compare sizes.

How much are you paying for yours?

Shirish

So if you don't mind me asking what was the price to have the top end rebuild of your 3.2? I have a bill for the machining of new cylinders and three angle vavle cutting at £1300. Is this reasonable?

Cheers
