3 Spoke steering wheel

I'm in the process of buying a 996 but one of my key requirements was the 3 spoke wheel, the standard one just doesn't do it for me I'm affraid, I also understand that if you're 6'2" or over it's not ideal and I am a big 'un.

I think I've found the car that has everything I need at about the right price for me, but........ it has the standard 4 spoke jobby! I would have also liked the white dials and a bit of Ali but beggars can't be choosers and all that.

Is it a big issue to change the wheel after-market - I'm sure I could get the specialist I'm buying from to do the labour but what about buying the wheel, would it be a dear do? When I search around I only seem to find 'styling company' wheels, not OEM Porsche.

Any info appreciated.

Thanks

there are a few 3 spoke wheels on ebay every now and again but mostly without the airbags.
You cant take a 4 spoke airbag and make it fit a 3 unfortunately.
Maybe best to try a breaker or here

interior accessories / airbag and parts

The steering wheel for me is set too low anyway; I'm only 5 11 but the top of the wheel chops off the top of instruments, and it's just as well I never worry about the voltmeter and oli pressure gauge...

Thanks for the link Elliot.

The three spoker with airbag from Design911 is £499 which isn't too bad really. I'll have a look at breakers and fleabay too.

Cheers

I have done the 4 spoke to 3 spoke job myself and have the destructions how to do it somewhere - let me know if you need them..

Paid £300 for mine with airbag from pistonheads classified

Thanks for the link Richard, I have a look there.

Graham, your interior looks really nice. I do need this wheel, the dealer has offered to fit it if I buy it.

I fully agree - 3 spoke wheel has to be the way to go. I changed from 4 to 3 spoke on a previous 2.7 Boxster. OPC didn't charge anything to fit it (done as part of a 12k service). I got the 3 spoke wheel from Trading Post (£250 as a remember). Just be aware that there are two different centre crests on the 3 spoke wheel (one chrome/black, the other traditional gold/red/black coloured).

Cheers for now,

Adrian Tillin

I changed the wheel on my 'old' 4S for a Raid wheel bought directly from Germany from the Aitwe Factory for 500 Euros. I understand that they supply the likes of RUF/Techart (and Aston Martin).

As long as you disconnect the battery and leave well alone for an hour, the wheel swap is a sinch.

Thanks for all the replies everybody.

I've found a place advertising in this months 911 & Porsche World who have 'As New' quality used wheels with new Airbags for £390+VAT, unless one comes up on the forums or Piston Heads etc, I think I'll probably go for one of those.

Anybody want a good quality used 4 spoke wheel going cheap[:D]

The link worked for me, but it was a manual steering wheel, and it sold a few minutes after Jules posted the link. I think you'll need a Tip wheel (for the wiring).

Thanks Richard I want to do away with the tip buttons. I've purchased the amg paddles which I'll fit then get the wheel recovered.

Am looking to do exactly the same: buy a 3-spoke wheel (without buttons) and ask Edition9 to add paddles. I'll then keep my OE one in case I sell car and the new owner worries about its originality..!

Would therefore be grateful if anyone can answer the following:
- will a Boxster (986.1) 3-spoke wheel fit my 996.2 boss and airbag module (I have the the 'stitched' Turbo centre)?
- is a non-Tip wheel more of an issue to convert to paddles than one with the buttons already (Pieman you may already know this)?

Also Pieman, how easy was it to get the AMG paddles and is there any particular variant to get?

Many thanks in advance for your help :)

I can't upload pics from my iPad if you pm me at s.d.williams@hotmail .com I'll forward pics put the paddles in yesterday to another thre spoke I bought without the standard tip buttons. Also am having it covered as we speak. My trimmer friend is going to do the whole wheel aperture from the air bag but he can do that also.
