Hi
My 86 944 Turbo came out of the bodyshop today - had one of the sills repaired. It has been in storage for approx 3 months. Now this might seem like a given but may I ask:

[1] Is it due to lack of use that the dial on the battery charge reads as 12 (the far right hand side dial I refer to) - I am sure it was higher before. Might be a given and an obvious reason, just wanted to check.

[2] Is it due to lack of use that the oil pressure reads about 3 out of 5 - used to be more around 4, maybe 4.5....and when idle the oil gauge arrow is oscillating quite wildly.

[3] There was a faint bit of fumes/smoke coming from the engine but after a few miles it seemed to clear itself. Is that again down to lack of use?

None of [1] to [3] seemed apparent 3 months ago but like I say it has been SORN and unused for 3 months

Any advice most appreciated.
Best Regards
Julian

the volt meter sometimes read low

oil pressure is ok unless it is reading below 2

cant help with the smoke from engine though !

This may help, it worked for me.

I found I have a couple of niggles, this weekend is the first time I have actually filled the fuel tank to the brim only to find the my fuel gauge only reads 3/4 full. I had also noticed over the last couple of weeks my voltmeter had dropped to just above 12v and fluctuating. After googling my fuel gauge issue I tried this little tip of removing the instrument cluster and cleaning what are described as the rugby balls, there's four in total and in the picture below you can see I have removed one.

To remove the rugby balls undo the 7mm nut and carefully use a flat blade screwdriver to lever them up, once out clean the brass pins. The post I read says to clean them with metal polish but I used some micro mesh ( which is really fine wet and dry) you can see the difference

I cleaned all four of these up and also cleaned the legs on the removable resistor which straddles the voltmeter plus I took the opportunity to fit led bulbs to the cluster and one that lights the window vent symbol, another plus was until today I had never actually bothered to figure out where the trip meter reset was but when I found the switch was adrift behind the vents I now have a working trip meter also.

So after a few hours fettling I now have a fuel gauge that reads full, a voltmeter that reads approx 13.8v and is steady (the best its ever been), led illumination, and a working trip meter and a big grin :D

Probably the gauges as described above but could just be the alternator voltage regulator.

Again more than likely the gauges

Sounds like a small oil leak that drips onto the exhaust. When you start the car the oil burns off.

Hope that adds to the options for you.
