My only concern would be that if it gets wider, then is starts to become more of a motorway/autobahn car, and less usable on smaller twisty roads. We wouldn't want it to get to Testarossa proportions.
I do like the yellow colour that is used in all the photos at the moment.

Anyway, I reckon it may well all bolt onto a 996, so I can upgrade and remain discrete, and know that it shouldn't break.

What is strange is that there are some differences in the specs, particularly the power output.
Once they make the press announcement at Geneva, then we should be able to get the true information from Porsche themselves. I don't when the website pages will be up - hopefully quite quickly, but we'll see.

i wouldn't say the SL55 rivalled a 911TT, new or old!
I think they must mean co$t wise [&o]

However, the reason for the 911's success, and the 996TT's in particular, is the lack of an obvious alternative.
At 90-100K, it is cheaper, faster, more practical then some, and more everyday useable than the alternatives.
You have the
Gallardo (more expensive 10-15K not as everyday useable, attracts too much attention, high running costs, unknown reliability if really used)
360 Modena or 430 Modena (more expensive 20K+, not as everyday useable, attract way to much attention, high running costs, high depreciation is you actually use it)
Other Ferraris (too expensive, similar issues issues)
Bentley GT (2 tonne tank, with awful fuel consumption, not so sporting but quite nice interior, slower)
Aston V8 (cheaper but too slow)
Aston DB9 (more expensive 80K, not as sporty)
Aston Vantage (similar performance, but double the price)
TVR (similar performance, questionable reliability, cheaper, not an everyday car, image?, build quality)
Mercedes (too heavy, quality questions?, not as fast, not as efficient, not as sporty or involving)
Jaguar XK (too slow)
If I had to replace it, as others have already considered, it is almost impossible to think of anything (except maybe a different 911 variant).
Of course this does not mean it is necessarily better than the other cars listed, just that if you 'get' what it is supposed to be, and want that mix of performance, useability and handling, principally on the road, then it is in a niche on its own. Which is precisely how you make money - try not to directly compete.
