356/912 Engine and VW 1600 Differences are?

" How long you got ..."

well that was a top answer [8|]

the fundamental answer is they follow the same design, eg a flat 4 configuration.
The same as the Subaru engine in it's modern cars. The most important way to try to understand the difference is " TOLLERANCE " this is the key area to best describe the difference.

The flat 4 beetle engine VW made produced about 55bhp at best and the early cars 35bhp

The Porsche 912 produced 90 bhp on paper but, do some research and I think you might find it a little more, as the 911T ( if I remember right ) was 115 bhp. I can't 100% remember if it was the 911T was talked up or the 912 was talked down I think it was abit of both. A lot of car makers did this in the 60's. So what I am saying here is that Porsche wanted a defiant power difference on paper between the two, so the buying public feel they are getting more. And they did 6 cylinders.

The 356 engine in the early days where very much VW in fact the case was stamped VW internals where changed I know the crank was changed as the bearings are different. So as they progressed the tolerance was the part that made the major difference. As today a VW motor can run for 100,000's miles with end float of .0025" or more "¦shocking!!! Put a Porsche motor in that situation and your be off to Andy Prill with check book in hand

I could go on for hrs but if you have any more hunger to know, you have my number give me a bell

My friend has a VW company here in Portsmouth, I can tell you he is getting a safe 165BHP from a type 1 VW motor upto 240 bhp, but so many internals have been changed it's £3-4K to do it..

But apart from the VW motor on the whole has a single carbs and the heads are different eg valves smaller etc but I think you would know that anyway..

Early 356 Motors where 1100 1300 1500 ( prob following VW trend for 1500's and poss class entries for motor racing events ) and then the all important 1600 , now the 1720 is more the usual and the hmmm not tried one but 1900

Then there is the type 4 motor seen in the 914 and the 912E and type 25 campers etc etc

Hope it helped..

I forgot to mention that the early Porsche engines where 2 pc cases as well until about 55 and the A model came foward. [;)]
