356 Buyers guide anyone?

A friend of my Uncle has offered his 356C to us which he has owned since around 1971. I haven't seen it yet but i am told by my Uncle that it is in superb condition, rarely used and garaged since he has owned it along with other classics in his collection. I believe it is rust free and has had numerous thousands of pounds spent on it over the years. Unfortunately it doens't have matching numbers but does have the correct engine for its age. I believe he bought the car without an engine and then eventually sourced a correct replacement over the years (He was in the motor trade before retiring).

Before i dip into my pocket i would like to give the car a thorough going over and was wondering if anyone has a decent buyers guide in PDF or no of one on line to assist me. He is looking for £18.5K for it

Any help would be appreciated

Why not email Fred Hampton the 356 Register Secretary he has a wealth of knowledge and should be able to assist you.
Contact details in Porschefile.

I used to own a 1963 356B S90 , had the workshop manuals , all the books etc - based on that hands on experience my advice if you are serious is to get it inspected by Peter Morgan , or someone similar.

Thanks for all the advice

Yes it will have an independant inspection by someone before wew buy. The good thing is my Uncle actually bought it with this guy in the early 70s (Sold his share later) and he was actually his best man so he does know a lot about the car and waht has been done to it over the years

Hi Steve.

Contact Chris Sargent at GCR Central in Leicester. Although the majority of his work is early 911s (looks after all my cars) he also looks after a number of 356s including engine rebuilds etc. He may be able to help you with an inspection. Number is 0116 2780900.

Ian.

I wasn't wanting to buy it honest, I've got too many as it is (bought an A in the summer as well as the list below) and anyway it's too new for my taste!
Just thought it best to recommend someone who is close to the car rather than just anyone.
Helen Goff lives in Ashby de la Zouch and owns 2 356s including a C she has restored. She might be able to take a look.

Thanks for the advice 356ist!

I maybe having an initial look at the car this weekend so i'll take some photos and post them

Cheers

Steve

might be able to take a look.

Take your initial look - hope things look good, Then if you are still interested taking someone who 'might be able to take a look' is not enough IMO however well meant. All that glitters is not gold - the only route is to get someone who really knows the cars inside out to take a look on a ramp. Get the car inspected properly and you will get a full written report.. It may cost you a couple of hundred quid but your money would be well spent.

It's true John that all that glitters is not gold (trust me I've found out the hard way), however there are also people out there who are supposed to be experts on these cars but will dismiss a good car because they are scared of some sort of comeback if they get it wrong.
This happened with my cabriolet. A number of experts looked at it for other people (including Porsche Cars so I'm told) and dismissed what was a perfectly good car that needed finishing, it's just down to what you expect a 40+ year old car to be like. Even with an appraisal, this doesn't mean you won't have to spend money on it or have problems with it.

Steve, when you look at the car just remember that bodywork is everything. If it's not straight, the gaps aren't uniform and even then you will probably be looking at trouble.

Yeah I agree. Hopefully i will be going over tomorrow all being well. just waiting for a call this evening
