356 Electronic Ignition

I fitted a Pertronix ignition to my 356B Super 90 about 10000 miles ago, bought it at Techno Classica Essen for £90 ish. The fitting is a simple DIY job which is best carried out with the distributor out of the engine. You remove the rotor arm and the existing points and fit a magnetic 'chopper' to the shaft and the electronic "points" where the original points were using the original screws, then connect the two cables to the coil + and - terminals and fit it all back into the engine. Approximate the timing and then set the timing with a Strobe Points Light to what the book says. You will find the engine will run more smoothly, it can set to tick over very slowly, almost stalling if you want because every firing of the spark plug is at the perfect timing position. It also pulls more evenly and the fuel consumption is improved a noticeable amount. I would not hesitate to fit Pertronix to my next 356 its installation is invisible to the outside world. Oh and you can forget ever having to reset the points gap ever again.

Regards to you and Jo.

Hi Peter, thanks for your comments on the PEYT article it took some time to finally get it published and I hope it was worth the wait. We will not be in the 356 on this years PEYT I have sold it to Charles Marsland as he says and he is doing some work on it as well as on my 911 engine which I hope to have ready with all cylinders firing and with No oil leaking out of the rear as has been the case for many years. PEYT is progressing and will be making contact soon. TTFN
