This event , as notified in Porsche Post March and April editions, duly took place and the Shuttleworth Collection duly staged an airshow to remember , the first of the year timed to commemorate VE Day......
I did not apply due diligence to counting the cars parked in our allotted area but the numbers were roughly half those on last years Duxford 356 Day , more than 20 cars but maybe no more than 25 , I also did not take any pictures but maybe someone will post some to this thread ?
......the rain stopped , the low clouds cleared , the flying display kicked off with a replica Messerschmitt 109G making several passes over the airstrip , followed by other WW2 aircraft , each plane was in the air for several minutes , a lot better than a simple flypast.
The star aircraft of the show for me was the Fieseler Storch . When I arrived just after 10am , it was parked up in a hangar , by 11 am it was moved outside to a preflight grass apron , then as wind got up and some rain returned , it was secured like a tent with tethers , and round about 230 pm it was moved back inside as the powers that be reckoned it would not be safe to go up .
However the owner did not want to disappoint the large crowd ( more than 356 register present ) and he got it taken out and then he flew it . It flew like a small sailboat on the one hand , appearing to turn within its own length , and like a kite or kestrel on the other hand , just hanging in the wind overhead...taking full advantage of the 'hazardous conditions ' . Brilliant .
Storch top speed 105mph and aircooled engine , like a 356 ?? Ok , top speed of a 356 could be higher in the right hands , when I was young and brave I got a Super 90 up to an indicated 110 mph but have never tried to repeat that on public roads.
For those that braved the wet weather , and were prepared to miss competing events like Supercar Sunday at Goodwood or the Donington Historic Festival, the reward was to chat with 356 aficionados like the evergreen Mike Smith of PRS , or to see a 4 cam engine up close in a Carrera 2 .
Big thanks to Fred Hampton for organising and looking forward to next year's 356 Day.
