Hi, I have a 356b T6 Karmann Coupe fitted with a non original number 75 bhp engine. Is there a way from the chassis / engine number of identifying what the original engine was 60 / 75 or 90 bhp? I have a cert of authenticity but this doesn't help!
Regards Drew

You have not supplied any Chassis or engine numbers or the engine case number so it is difficult to be exact as to what model you have and therefore what the correct engine for it should be.
You say it is a T6 356B, so that dates the car from September 1961 July 1963.
Generally speaking the normal and "S" engines, would be fitted with Zenith 32NDIX carburettors and the crankcase numbers should be 616/1 for the 60 hp engine or 616/12 for the 75 hp. The higher power engine would have Solex 40PII-4 carbs and the crankcase should be numbered 616/7 for the 90 hp engine.
These numbers can be seen on the crankcase top in front of the fan casing near to the oil filter lower pipe.
If it was a genuine 90 HP engine the car should be badged as a Super 90 just below the engine cover.
There are so many cars around that are not standard so your engine may well be fitted with "Big Bore" pistons and cylinders and only a engine dismantle can truly confirm the presence of this upgrade.
Good Luck, Robin.

If you have the chassis number or the original engine number on the certificate if authrnticity i will look it up for you.

Thanks Robin, your information would indicate my original engine was a 75 bhp which has been replaced with another 75 bhp unit.
