3rd and 5th gear 'missing'

Hi all

Just wondering whether anyone has ever experienced this strange thing. I have a 2001 facelift 996 C4 and the other day, when changing up from 2nd to 3rd and then from 4th to 5th, both 3rd and 5th gears were 'missing'. It felt as though the gearstick had disconnected from the linkage or something. 2nd, 4th and 6th were all fine. However, when stopping and trying again whilst stationary, all was fine!!! Then when continuing, it did it again, so I just went straight to 4th with no problem. Then when changing down all fine, 3rd was there (and subsequently so was 3rd and 5th later on accelerating)!!

This has happened on a couple of occasions now so I am getting a little worried as to what it could be.

Amy ideas??

I had this happen to me and my OPC only charged for the one hours labour as all they did was re-attache the cables, I had no parts to replace.

Cheers for your replies. Strange though how it only does it now and then! Surely if teh cables had come off, it would not work at all?

Do you know wherther this is covered under the OPC extended warranty?

what you tended to find when looking at the gearbox was the metal lugs that locate the cables in the holder on the box were either broken or still bent in and not holding the cable in place, one cable has plastic lugs which commonly get snapped off when rms needs doing,

it only has to vibrate out of its holder to make gearchange difficult and what dealers tend to do is put the cable back in the bracket the best they can and cable tie it in too to secure it fully.. doubt extended will cover it unless something has failed which isn't down to clips being broken..

Hi,

I can confirm that this is not covered by the extended warranty. I lost reverse a month ago and the OPC just fixed the cable end back on at the gearbox end.

I have not had any problems since.

Regards, Jason
