3rd year Warranty Exclusions

I extended the warranty for an extra years cover at a cost of £1,350.00

The guy who cleans the car for me said that the centre caps on the wheels were corroding, so I phoned the Local OPC.

The centre caps are apparently an item subject to wear and tear.[&:]

Since the car has only done 11,000 miles this would seem unfair.

Had the caps corroded or been reported within the original 2 year warranty they would have been replaced.

My son's 911 has had the same problem but as his car is under 2 the caps will be replaced under warranty !

Should I buy a DBS volante on thie strength of this petty penny pinching attitude of Porsche ?

Only if a) you wish to compare AM warranty with Porsche and b) have more opportunities to do so![;)]

I have exactly the same issue with my centre caps Tony...
I can't exactly see how they wear??
Oddly they are plastic yet have corroded [&:]

Replace sons

Replace with yours

Replace again[:D][:D]

Well, I did say to the OPC's Service Advisor that there was more than one way to skin a cat ! [:D]

You tend to find they get water or salt ingress around the edges of the badge and this lifts the top laquer and looks like corrosion. Of curse the plastic has not corroded its the paint and laquer which has. Most manufacturers see wheels as consumables now and you are lucky if you get anything done on them at all even under warranty. Most they will do is refurbish them if the wheel itself shows corrosion. Whilst you have a Porsche warranty check them before it runs out every year you have it.

I had a similar issue with BMW. Their reasoning was that they couldn't control the hostile environment that wheels get exposed to - especially aggressive cleaning materials and high pressure washers that leave them more exposed to the elements.

Never ceases to amaze me how penny pinching companies are. For the sake of a few quid to the dealer a customer is made to feel very unhappy and starts to look at other makers for his next car.

Sounds like you need to find a friend with a newer car and swap the caps over [;)]

Then he claims on his warranty.

I've always just used a Maguairs car shampoo with whats left in my bucket- Yes I know I'm the last of the polishers [;)]
So certainly nothing OTT

I think its just a case of the laquer lifting and allowing the grime in..
My wheels are still spotless- its just the plastic centres... [&:]

Why don't 'They' make some wheel caps that are resistant to hostile environments then ? [&:]

Just out of interest what wheel cleaner are you using? anything with a slight acidity to it will do this!

I have my car cleaned by a supposedly professional cleaner and since the car has Ceramic Brakes there has been no reason to use acids or the suchlike to clean off ingrained Brake Dust.

I believe that the wheels have been cleaned using normal shampoo and have had a protection wax called Rim Wax applied to help prevent corrosion.

Think I might borrow a demonstrator from the OPC and switch the centre caps ![;)]

I thought the whole idea of the new (more expensive) warranty was that acted exactly like the new car warranty...in that it covered everything apart from consumables...wheel centre caps are surely not consumables?

I'm surprised anyone thinks the centre caps should be replaced under warranty. Assuming they're ok from the outset, they are subjected to all manner of abuse from weather, salt, chemicals, heat. Besides, they are relatively inexpensive to replace, something like £25 each.

The extended warranty is there to help you sleep easy at night against big bills but it's not a no-limits get-out-of-jail card. Like any other form of insurance, you lose out in the long term if you have average claims history. Put the money on the extended warranty aside as your own "self-insurance" pot and, in the long term, you'll be in profit.

You'll be trying to convince us brake disks are not a consumable item next...
