4 x 4 Warning Light

My warning light came on a few days ago on an eager bend. It reset itself after a restart of the car however exhibited itself again throughout the day.

Went to see my friendly independent today with the warning lights coming on this morning. He said most likely there are two valves that re part of the 4x4 system (and their seals will have perished. He said he has changed a few over the years.

Now not sure if this will be the case and at £300 a pop plus labour (he recommends getting both of them done).

Ironically the warning lights did not come on leaving his place this morning and it was an exhilarating ride on the way home...

Any thoughts?

The MOST common issues causing the PDAS light are low battery voltage and low hydraulic fluid level. The latter is particularly sensitive - even the tiniest bit below the MAX mark will potentially cause the problem. The "valves" your indie is talking about are the slave cylinders that operate the two diffs locks (under the control of the PDAS system) and it's relatively rare that they cause a problem.

Your post mentions "warning lightS", but the PDAS light is only one light. Was the ABS light also showing?? If so, this combination is a common symptom of HT ignition leakage - an effect of leaky coils and/or broken or worn distributor caps and rotors. My car had exactly this problem when I first bought it and it took over a year to find someone (JZM) who recognised the symptoms and identified the cause. It's never done it since.

Hope that helps.

This gives me another excuse to take the beauty out tomorrow. When the lights went on I recall the alert one which when you pressed the reset button went off. However there were two more which continued to flash of one was the 4x4 one. I should get my facts in order for future posts!!

How is it best to check the hydraulic fluid....I will have to get the manual out to familiarise myself where it i!!

Just surprised why the indi cannot tell me to look at the obvious before giving me the doom and gloom.

Kind Regards

Siraj

Dave,
forgive my ignorance but which lights are we talking about here?
Ever so often the light in front of the gear lever flashes on my car car but the ABS light on the dash "Christmas tree" does not light.
I just ignore this situation as the flash only seems to happen on fast, steep cornering. This could be the fluid level??

Ian,

The little yellow light on the console is the PDAS activation light - it comes on when the PDAS system activates. That's how it's designed to work and it just goes to show you how often the PDAS comes into play. If you are interested to make it even more noticeable there is a green light on the oil level/temp gauge which comes from the factory with no bulb fitted. If you fit a bulb it provides a duplicate of the yellow light on the console. Porsche felt it was too distracting so chose to delete the bulb, but I find it quite informative.

The lights that Siraj is talking about are the PDAS and ABS warning (red) lights in the oil level/temp gauge which come on together with the ! light at the top of the gauge. The ! light will always come on with any warning automatically and can be cancelled with the press button but the PDAS and ABS lights will latch on and will only be reset when the ignition is turned off and on again. The PDAS light is the top right in the attached pic and you can just make out the green PDAS activation light to the left of it. The ABS light is the top left of the bottom cluster.

Hope that helps.

Regards

Dave

Thanks Dave

Still not managed to get her out, started snowing today....why should I be worried its a 4 x 4!!

Dave,
thanks for the photograph and detailed explaination also the prompt response.
Now I know where you two guys are you coming from.[:)]

I had the very same problem before xmas.
Check the brake fluid level first, this being the quickest and cheapest option.
My fluid level was low, topped it up and now evrything is fine!

Checked the fluid and it was between Min and Max. Topped it up so hopefully when I finally managed to take it her out will be able to update you guys.

I always wanted a 964 and somehow even though it is taxed, insured, fuel'd up just not getting the chance to take her out. I have done more miles tha last two days in my slug (Volvo) than I have done since my 4 months of ownership of the 964.....

Anyway its always a big smile when I open the garage door..

Come on sun out you come.... [:D]

Sorted.....just a wee bit low on the fluids...opened her up gently around Leicester B Roads around the Light Airport we have....and no warning lights at all. All good, thanks to Dave (again!) for the point in the right direction.
