40,000 mile service... ouch!

Morning all,

Dropped my car off yesterday morning for its 40,000 mile service at my local OPC (East London) £888 all in.
I knew it was going to be an expensive week as I have to get some new rear tyres too.

Unfortunatley they have discovered some problems....

Front tie rods have play in, therefore need to be replaced. Quote of £750.

Cam covers are leaking oil. They haven't said how bad the leak is they are going to investigate further. Quoting around £1900 for the work.

They have kindly said they will give me discount on the labour if I do it all at once.

Anyone had experience of these problems?

Thanks,
J

Just got a call from the OPC the discount they are offing is great.
Total cost was due to be £3584 as my washer bottle needs flushing too (additional £46).
They will do the whole lot for £2803. A saving of £781!
They have also said they will price match on tyres. Is Micheldever still the best place?
Anyone got any rough prices?
Thanks,
J

Hi,
I'm guessing that you don't have an extended Porsche warranty?...this would have covered the leaking cam covers.
I would get the tie rods done at an independent.

Check out www.blackcircles.com for the tyres

Good luck

Stick to the fixed price service and get a quote for all the other work from one of the many decent Specialists. When you have there figure you can decide which way to jump assuming all this work is actually needed in the first place []

every time i hear this kind of story i am pleased i went with an indy i can trust to look after my car from now on.may not end up any cheaper but at least i dont have the suspicion that whenever a big service bill appears that it just may NOT be needed!!

Just checked. I still have warranty so all good there on the Cam Covers.
Independent in East London - No chance. I may as well have a go myself.

Thanks for the tyre link though.

I can't fault the East London OPC. Price matched the tyre cost I gave them and actually sourced tyres that are no longer available.
Courtesy car at short notice since they need to keep the car longer and no daily charge or mileage limit (i know some charge £20 a day and limit you to 100 miles). Brand new Boxster S which I'm actually really impressed with and perfect for this weather. They even noticed it was my birthday tomorrow on my driving license and wished me happy birthday for then.

Cam covers have been leaking for a while but I have been waiting to get it serviced as it was only very tiny drips initially.
Tie rods, who knows but I like the peace of mind I get from an OPC. If an indy gets it wrong where do you go then?

My OPC quoted £885 for the 4yr major service, however this has been negotiated down to £750 including changing the belt if necessary.
Have recently bought 2 new Continental Sport Contacts 3's 265/40/18 for £217 ea. fitted. Black Circles are frequently the cheapest.

good to know you have an opc you are 100%happy with-if you are then no reason to change, especialy if you have no indy you can trust.reverse situation round here[:D]
