4000 rpm redline?

I went to see a 2003 996 C4S today as a possible change for my 996 C4. It's a tiptronic (which is what I need), but when I started it and blipped the throttle it wouldn't rev over 4000 rpm. Didn't matter whether it was in Park or Neutral - it just wouldn't rev higher. Is this normal? Is there something clever that only allows the engine to rev higher if you are actually driving and in a gear? Or does it mean there is a major problem?!

Thankyou Richard. I now feel suitably stupid, but relieved and better informed.

Have also just noticed that your car is not dissimilarly priced to some C4S cars, which brings a whole new dilemma to my new car search! Is it wrong of me to have a modified 944 Turbo AND a 996 Turbo (which would be immediately remapped)?

It took me a while to find that out too, so don't feel stupid.

Not wrong to think that way IMHO. Two very different cars and character. You'll probably find the Turbo cheaper to insure than a C4S too. Crazy, I know, but many have found it so. Other running costs are similar, with the exception being a spark plug change.

you're right Richard, my Turbo S is significantly cheaper than my C4S was, just insured it this week for £407. [:D]

Hi Ashley,

£407 sounds amazing. I'm paying more than that on a C4 Cab. Who are you insured with???
