40000/4 year service

With my car only having done 26000 after 4 years, I'm a bit unsure of what service to give it. Given that my OPC wants approx £450 and £950 for mini or full 40,000 service, I'm in a bit of a quandry. Putting future sales issues to one side and changing the oil probably being the most important issue, whats your thoughts?

Well a basic service (2 years) is basically an expensive oil change. At 4 years the list of items on the service schedule is notably longer and includes replacement of plugs, fluids, filters and various other things.

So, even though there's not a huge amount of mileage on your car, personally, I think I would be tempted to follow the service book.

Agree with Tony - if you can't afford OPC prices, take it to a good independant like RPM, Jazz, Autofarm, etc. Don't skimp on maintenance or it could you a lot more in the long term!

The Spark plug change is becuse Porsche found out about them getting stuck in the engine with corrosion over time. It is definately worth doing just in case in my opinion. Any of the extra 4 year srvice items are there for a reason and should not be missed as if anything goes wrong because they were not done then it could be V expensive.

I have just been quoted by the OPC a cost on a 4 year service on a 987 2.7 26 k miles
Major service £625 +below items
Brake fluid £160
Tyre sealent £45
Spark plugs £167
Check drive belt £56
Aircon service £200
All inc Vat + my liver and heart [:D] save £120 if I bring my own Mobil I

Get a quote from a few independents then go back to the OPC and ask them to come up with a better offer. If you don't, they'll just take the Michael.

Have no intention of going to the OPC for all that work the minimum requirement to get a stamp in the book is approx £500 the rest will be done by a indy or a nice man on this forum who has just sold his red boxster [:D]

at 4 years and 23k miles i had the OP. Do the service and the spark plugs and the belt check. The spark plugs were like new. I supplied my own oil and the bill was about £600 with pcgb discount. The local indi quoted about the same but that included brake fluid and changing the belt.
I got the brake fluid changed for £40 by my excellent BMW indi, I haven't bothered with the tyre sealant because by all accounts it's nigh on useless anyway.

Brian, Definately taking the **** on Brake fluid change. Its standard Fluid and its a simple job to change it with the right fluid pump system and I never have my Air con serviced in any of my cars. It only needs to be regassed if it stops being cold and serviced if it starts to smell.

My OPC , (NEWCASTLE) MATCHED INDEPENDENT ON MY 4 YEAR SERVICE, SAVED NEARLY £250 AND I OF COURSE GOT THAT STAMP! GIVE IT A TRY......

Porsche changed the service pricing recently, your Major Service should cost £610 and the Brake Fluid Change being £150 when taken with the service (all inclusive of VAT).

As for the Aircon service, I would call this 'creative maintenance' by the dealer. Your service will replace the pollen filter and unless your aircon isn't working correctly this is all that is required.

Also watch out for a similar dealer ploy relating to alignment.

The gas should be replenished occasionally since it also contains an oil that keeps all the seals lubricated. If not replenished, the seals dry out, you might get leaks and some components, especially the compressor, might fail. And the sky will fall in. Allegedly.

[FONT=verdana, geneva"]Running your air conditioning year round will help maintain the system
If you run the air conditioning in the winter it will help to keep the system well lubricated and leak tight. This is because the refrigerant actually carries the oil that lubricates the system and most importantly the compressor. It also keeps the seals and hoses moist, thus preventing them from drying out and cracking which can lead to leaks.

I also note the add inside the back cover of this months PP. Looks like the Porsche 'marketeers' are on this one too.

Nothing like mentioning dust and germs .... has me quaking .... I better book my air con treatment now .... not!!

Well, I've had my car for nearly 9 years and it's not been regassed yet...

However I had the bumper off the other weekend and I see staining on the corners of the condensers from the oil in the air-con fluid [:'(] So I'll need to get new condensers in the very near future...[&:]
