Stuttgart. The 911 model reaches the age of 40 this year "” and is as young as ever! Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, the car's Stuttgart-based manufacturer, is celebrating this anniversary with a 911 jubilee model limited to 1,963 units, which will be available from European dealers from October on at prices starting at 82,300 Euro (excluding VAT and country-specific requirements). Including VAT, it will cost 95,616 Euro in Germany. It will be available from November in the US at 89,800 US-$ (plus tax). The world premiere for this latest version of Porsche's sports car will take place at the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA) in September.

The "40th anniversary 911" edition marks the climax of the successful career of what is known as the "996" internally at Porsche and by Porsche connoisseurs. It is based on the rear-wheel drive 911 Carrera and has particularly sporty suspension settings and many top-quality equipment features.

The 911 anniversary model is available exclusively in GT silver metallic "” a color that was only available until now for the 612-hp Carrera GT high-performance sports car.

The 911 anniversary model is in excellent shape for its 40th birthday. Distinguishing styling features are the front cooling air openings adopted from the 911 Turbo. The side air intake grilles at the front are painted in body color. Other highly expressive styling details are the left and right sill trims, the shot-blasted, polished 18-inch Carrera wheels and the high-gloss polished exhaust tailpipes. A sliding sunroof, bi-xenon headlights with dynamic beam angle control and a headlight cleaning system complete the exterior features. There is an aluminum "911" logo on the engine cover at the rear.
The 3.6-liter flat-six engine has a power output of 345 bhp (254 kW). This is 25 bhp more than the regular 911 and can be sensed particularly in the upper engine speed range, which is perfect for drivers with an ambitious sports driving style. The direct accelerator pedal linkage guarantees a spontaneous response. This modification makes the "40th anniversary 911" one second faster, at 16.5 seconds, when accelerating from 0 to 200 km/h. Its maximum speed goes up by 5 km/h to 290 km/h. The jubilee 911's body has been lowered by ten millimeters compared with the standard production model and has firmer suspension, leading to even more sporty road behavior and a more direct driving experience. An additional mechanical rear-axle differential lock (with a locking effect of 22 percent in the traction and 27 percent in the coasting mode) results in even better traction at the driven rear wheels and, consequently, optimum acceleration potential. The electronic Porsche Stability Management (PSM) system also comes as standard.

The interior is trimmed in particularly soft dark gray natural leather. The jubilee model of course has sport seats, with two-stage seat heating. The center console, seat backs and groove trim strips on the dashboard and the handbrake lever side covers are finished in GT silver metallic. The interior looks even more stylish and exclusive, thanks to details such as the aluminum-finish instrument dial rings and the numbered "911 40th anniversary" plaque on the center console. The Porsche sound package combined with a CD radio (CDR 23) provides excellent listening.

The "911 40th anniversary" model is the 13th version of the Porsche 911 currently available and the second fastest car in Porsche's production car program with a naturally aspirated engine, following the GT3.

Sorry to cynical , but it rather smacks of a " run out model" special edition to me, just like they do with things like the Ford Tahiti or perhaps a Vauxhall sport2 etc etc., throw in a few extra goodies & give it trendy name !!!
All the press tell us that the new 997 will be available from autumn 2004, with around the same 340-ish BHP but an upgraded interior & new " retro" /more macho look & 19" wheel option' s etc etc. No doubt values of existing 996' s will drop a little 40th special included. If it was me I would wait for the 997, I only think the 40th makes sense if you are commited to a build slot pre-997, then it is likely (GT3' s/RS aside) to be the best residual pick of the current 996' s.
More interesting is exactly what the 997 will offer once everything is fully confirmed.
 
I tend to agree with you Grant. Not so sure about the residuals though. I bought a Millennium 911 in 2000. That was 4 wheel drive and was loaded with absolutely every special option available. Even the telephone handset was covered in leather. It was a beauty and they only built 911 of them. However when I came to trade it in, I was only given a couple of thousand more than I would have received for a standard 911. Hopefully the RS will not be affected by the new 997 range.
 
Pity that the switchable sports exhaust is not available as an option and is rather too expensive to retro fit due to the electrics. In fact, you may have noticed that the list of available options is not very comprehensive. Nevertheless, I have ordered one!! Any idea what rear spoiler would suit?
 
Grant I think I have to agree with you totally. Even though I have just bought a 996 C2 I believe that the 996 is coming to the end of its ' 996' product life cycle. I am no marketing person but when a model comes to its end new ' special editions' come out with new ' sexed up' colours, spec etc etc to try and keep the product from entering a decline. Almost every car marquee does this and will always do so.

With new competition on the not too distant future i.e. Baby Bently, Aston and even the Audi Nuveralli Porsche will have make sure that the timing of the new 911 will be right.

I spoke to a Porsche representative at Eynsham Hall about the 997 and he was trying hard to assure me that the new 997 release date of next summer is pure press speculation. Yeah right! Although no build date has been ' offically confirmed' Porsche dealers are taking deposits on the new model. I made this enquiry at the Merlin Camberlin dealership and they said that the £500 deposit has just inscreased to £2g to prevent speculators from pitching in for a quick profit... LOL....

I remember that the Lotus Elise new shape came out very quickly. Albiet cosmetic changes new buyers of the ' old shape' waiting to take delivery were sitting on owning an older model. Whats to say the same wont happen with the 996. I would hate to be the person to take delivery on a brand new porsche 996 only to read the very same day that the 997 has a build date confirmed!
 
Good point Nick, I have been asked to increase my deposit to £2000 which I will do.I share the same feelings as you; Porsche will have to be very carefull when choosing a release date.

BTW. How you finding the car?[:)]
