48k Service ... here we go again!

Firstly sorry about yet another servicing related question ...

My 2001 2.7 is coming up for it's 48k 4Yr Service, it has covered 23k miles, 5k of those since the last service.

Local OPC (Cambridge) quoted me £550 for the 48k service and told me that the belt change only needs doing once the car has reached 48k, obviously many cars have done this come the 4yr service.

They said with the belt change the price is around £700.

I am concerned that the car is maintained correctly but at the same time don't want to throw £££'s away.

Do I need the belt changed even though OPC says I don't ?

Thanks.

Mark,

The service history does not contain any annual checks even though it is low mileage.

When I was looking to purchase a used boxster service history was at the top of my list, I don't know how I would have felt about buying a boxster with annual checks appearing in it's history, probably not very happy about it. Therefore when I come to sell it I am concerned that others may also see this as a negative!

Well, Porsche have it in the service book as an approved service programme.
Do you use your car at 165MPH regularly on an autobahn? Trackdays throught the year?
The service schedule is approved by Porsche taking into account the cars intended use - the above being done regularly by German cars.
If it's good enough for that, then surely it's good enough for the UK?[:D]

You did say you didn't want to throw money away but wanted it maintained correctly. According to Porsche that is correctly...[;)]

Mark,

Good point well made.

I will book it in for the annual service, £151 (price off porsche uk website).

It appears that plugs should be replaced every 48k or no later than 4yrs, so I should have them done, £126.

Brake fluid should be done every 2 years so that is needed, £107.

Thanks for your help in easing my worrying mind!

Just don't blame me if something goes wrong![:D]

You've reminded me mine is due soon.
32K miles in just under 4 years, Brake fluid to do, had a 24K service 2 years ago, and an annual check last year.
Wonder what _I_ should have done this time...[&:]

In the service price list published in December 2004, an annual service is listed at £151, spark plugs at £126 - both as are mentioned in the thread. But a 986 belt change is just £19! Not £700. (It is £95 for the 987 belt change). Is the price list wrong?

Andrew

I noticed that too but assumed (rightly or wrongly) that it is £19 when combined with a full 48k service ... unless anyone knows better !

I doubt the £19 is enough to cover the time it takes to open tht door and push the passenger seat forwards - the first stage in getting access to the belt.

Pop-quiz:
What's next?[8D]

Really confused now !

Based on Marks comments I phoned Cambridge to book my car in for :

Annual Check £151
Plugs £126
Brake Fluid change £107

However, Kieren at OPC warned me off the Annual Check and said it wasn't reccomend and I really needed the full 48k even though the car has done 6k since last service, 48k includes :

Major Service inc. plugs & belt change £700
Brake fluid is extra at £107

This is the ONLY car I have ever owned where booking it in for a service is so stressfull! [] Starting to think an independant is the way to go for servicing also!

I have emailed Colchester for a second opinion!

Sorry but it sounds to me like they're having a laugh!

Colchester are an excellent dealership - I can sing their praises through 4 years of diligent and helpful service - everything from Goodwill claims they put in without having to be asked to making sure I always get my PCGB discount - again without having to be asked. They're thoughtful and never ever snotty even though I generally go there looking like something the cat's dragged in! [:D]

My local OPC advised without being probed that I only needed the annual service as I had only done 8K since the last service. I got quoted the same price as you. As I also wanted an oil and filter change, I enquired naively if that price included the oil change. After picking myself up off the floor, I decided to do the oil change myself to save another £150!.

[Mandy Rice-Davies] Well he would say that wouldn't he? [/Mandy Rice-Davies]

You have to wonder at the professionalism and integrity of an OPC that deliberately goes against the recommendations in the service book, and does unnecessary extra work to the financial detriment of a (presumably) valued customer.[:'(]

Colchester confirmed Marks earlier post e.g. Inspection, Plugs and Brake fluid.

Went back to Cambridge and went through things again but this time there response wasn't 'are you sure, we wouldn't reccomend it', it was, 'OK Sir no problem' !

Total bill £384 for the three items.

I guess with a nice new shiny building Cambridge have to try and recover as much back from customers asap, great!

Dawn, I was so close to using Colchester but as all history is cambridge stamped thought i'd try to carry on using them, however, i'll watch them more closely from now on. [8|]

Thanks everyone.

I was told by my local OPC (Staples Corner) that 'We don't do an annual service'.
It's in the handbook!
Go figure.
