Doesn't buy you a lot these days does it?
Had to fish for 5th gear once or twice last few days. No crunching or noises when it wouldn't engage, next try it would go in. It felt odd though, like someone was slightly moving the shifter gate every now and then for a laugh when I wasn't looking. Anyway, after extensive gearbox misery not so long ago, ending up in a 2nd complete rebuild, after the first rebuild revealed the crown and pinion needing replaced, and trying to track down internals for an AOR box, improved cooler solution, could go on, but the gearbox was in and out maybe 4 times. So anyway, a lot of time and money ended up invested, so really, fresh gearbox dramas were the last thing I needed!
So I lifted the gear gaiter and rubber seal for a butchers and saw that the circlip that secures the shifter to the linkage was missing in action! It's clearly not survived several rounds of gearbox hokey cokey and has popped it's clogs! Quick call to OPC and my 48p could be exchanged for a new circlip! Thank god!
Anyway, every day is a school day, so we now know the service interval for the linkage circlip is 4 gearbox changes! Safe in that knowledge you won't need to wonder what twat is moving your gear gate when you're not paying attention!
