4S - rear wheel arch air inlets

Hi All,

Relative newbie on this forum, here with my first post.
I'm based in France and am looking at buying a 993 4S from January 1998.
My question is, the car has the air inlets on the rear wings, like the Turbo S model, and I wanted to understand if this was standard-fit on the later 4S's or whether it was a Customer-spec'd option.

Grateful for your input.

Regards, Neil

They were special customer order - not standard on S versions. Good if they're the factory fitted orginals [;)] Good luck with the car.

Thanks Paul for the quick reply.
I haven't actually seen the car in the flesh yet - photos only.
Would you think it should be fairly obvious if they have been fitted at the factory or as an after-thought by a subsequent owner?
Regards, Neil

Probably difficult to tell but if fitted at the factory they should be on the option list for the car - i.e on the sticket under the bonnet and in the service booklet.

Ian.

T911UK - thank you very much for the info. - really appreciate that.

I've just been to see the car (didn't see your post beforehand). It really is gorgeous, difficult to fault it, the only issues are extremely minor. As far as these air inlets go - the owner (that is the 3rd owner) is convinced that they were fitted from new and were part of the "Turbo-look" option. I realise that that's rather at odds with what you're saying.

I also noticed that the car is fitted with the X97 & X98 options (ally g/lever knob & h/brake lever) which also aren't on your list.

I'm just wondering - as these 3 options that are physically present on the car are all "X" prefix and there are no "X" prefixes mentioned on your list - could they recorded somewhere else?

Anyway, thanks again for your support.

Neil

It is possible they were fitted at the dealer, so not recorded on the VIN but listed in the options, what are the X codes listed?

I haven't seen any paperwork with the car that mentions anything about any "X" prefix options.

A gear lever knob and a handbrake lever being fitted as 'dealer options' I can imagine - but the rear arch air inlets, I'd be very surprised if they'd be fitted at a dealership. Thanks again for your support.

Congratulations .. any photos of perspective purchase ? and in which part of France are you based ?

I'm in SW France, near Toulouse.

Very disappointed in the end. In the flesh, the car was terrific. However, after receiving copies of some of the recent bills and making a few discreet phone calls, including to the previous owner, it turns out that much of what the seller had told me about it's history (how long he had owned it; no. of previous owners; mileage, etc, etc) were extremely suspect, to say the least. So, in spite of the fact that the car was lovely, I dropped it like a stone. I also discovered that the asking price, which was "fixed", was 9k Euros more than what he had sold it for 6 months ago.
That's the second 993 I've got excited about recently only to find that the seller was being more than economical with the truth.
I'm a bit torn at the moment, recognising that it's going to be difficult to find the car that I want with 100% transparent service record including bills, on a car that's c.18 years old.
I think I can deal with a car that doesn't have ALL it's history, but I can't be doing with sellers that are 'wheeler-dealing' or outright mis-representing a vehicle that they're expecting me to pay c.50k Euros for.
By the way, the air inlets on the rear arches of this particular car were not factory-fitted items (even though the seller tried to assure me that they were).

Thanks again for your help/interest.

Neil

I presume you are buying a french registered LHD ? ..

From my experience, prices of second hand cars in France are more expensive than RHD UK cars.

I am often in SW France, near Perigueux, about 2 hours from Toulouse. Just driven back today in my 996 turbo. Awesome on french roads, but as I drove on UK roads, the M20, A2, North Circular and High Road Finchley became a traffic gridlock .. sheer nightmare !
