A representative from Newcastle OPC came to the monthly meeting last night offering up to 50% discount on labour charges for servicing of older cars at the OPC plus 10-15% off parts The cars have to be 7+ years old more details in the coming months at the meetings so get your self there

Very interesting saying as they quoted me £270 for a 12K service in October 2004, including a Coolant change and VAT. Bloke I spoke to was very helpfull.

When I rang them back in July 2005, they quoted mr £550 plus vat with no explanaition as to why.

Particularly unhelpfull they were - have they changed management?

Carl

I d`ont think thay have changed managment but policy to try to attract the older cars in North of the country

Come along to the next meeting the rep will be there again so you could have a word about it

Hope it's OK to add a little of what I was told when I spoke to the chap from OPC. First off.. very nice guy. Helpful. I have known / had dealings with the NE OPC over the years and this chap seems to know how to deal properly with people. Friendly and helpful even though I'm not running a new Porsche and am never likely to be.

My understanding is this: If your car is over 7 years old and you wish to take advantage of ths discounted deal - then the OPC in Newcastle will work on your car during the 'quieter' periods of the week. So for instance - I might leave my car with them one Saturday and agree to collect it the following weekend (it's not used every day). The OPC will take me home and then the following week will come and pick me up or deliver my car back to me. As far as I am aware there is no courtesy car available for this initiative.... those of you wanting to have fun with a 997 or Cayman - think again!

The clear benefits are that the OPC has all of the necessary up to date equipment needed to look after your car and we also (I believe) get a discount on parts.
I've always used a specialist in the area but have to admit, if the OPC can match (or get close to) their maintenance costs for my 964 - then I am more than tempted to take it to them. The price mentioned for a 12K service of £270 sounds pretty good to me... and of course there is the stamp in the book.

One slight question though... my car is a 16 year old Carrera 4... - how much experience would the guys at an OPC have of that particular model? I'd welcome thoughts on that one.

If I've got any of this wrong Nick - please correct me. Just trying to add a little more detail. I really hope this initiative does help the relationship between the club and our OPC. It's been a long time coming and I think it's worth encouraging.

I'm having my car serviced in the next couple of months - I'll keep you informed of what transpires!

Finally - I've been buying some parts recently and have found that with the discount and their help - the OPC have been frequently able to beat prices available from Porsche specialists and Internet sites. Can I suggest, if you are looking for parts, give Michael or Colin a call at Newcastle OPC. I can recommend them.

Thanks to everyone for their input, Colin your update is spot on as I understand it, thanks very much.

For those of you wishing to take advantage of these offers I am assured that they start straight away and the parts are initially 10-15% with the option of this increasing in the future!! So watch this space.

OPC Newcastle appear to be making an extreme effort to build bridges with the club (our region in particular) and we should embrace it as an excellent opportunity to increase member benefits and the quality of what our club membership has to offer.

Hi Nick - thanks for that. I ordered some parts from Newcastle OPC today and spoke to Colin. When I asked about price he gave me the full price and then knocked 15% straight off for PCGB membership.
Needless to say, I placed the order and pick up the parts on Thursday.

I had some work done recently and although the attitude is changing the knowledge and experience of the older cars was lacking...

Anything particular that made that lack of knowledge and experience of the older cars particularly evident?

Were you happy with the work done and ($1000000 question!) - would you take it back to them?

For example i specifically asked for a full compression and cylinder leakdown test. When came to collect I was told it "passed".After insisting on figures i was told they did not measure (or even understand the significance ) leakdown percentages. They have a gauge which reads red amber or or green on compression only. This information had taken 5 hours labour and is worthless according to better experts than me (JZ machtch). !

I have taken this up with the service manager and he has just agreed to re-do the test! So as with any garage its up to you to insist on the standard of work you require.Jct have a reputation to keep - so they will listen to reason!
