500 ml oil overfill

After missreading the text in my manual it looks like I over filled my engine oil during a top up session by approx 500 ml[]. Is this enough to be concerned about? The electronic gauge in the car is completely full over max pointer. Original reading was one block down on the gauge below max pointer which I now know means approx 400ml and I stupidly put in 900 ml!

So should I not worry or get some drained off or will a pressure release system sort this out? My car has just over 4000 miles and is 6mths old. Oil is Mobil 1 0W40. First top up since purchase.

I should know better as a Chartered Aerospace Engineer![][][]

Many thanks

Jase.

Jase,

500ml is an excessive amount. You will have to drain it. Excess oil will cause foaming and aeration of the oil and reduce its lubrication properties and therefore lead to excessive wear. Also said to foul plugs and damage the catalytic converters. [:(]

ok, is it fine to undo the sump plug slightly to drain and tighten without replacing any gaskets? Some cars seem to have 'use once' silcon seals and other copper O rings.

cheers and merry xmas!

Sounds like a good idea, might be quicker/cheaper though to drop a litre through the drain hole. Bet the nut is on tight, especially considering its an Allen Key job.

The drain plug uses a standard copper washer (well you didn't expect anything superior from Porsche did you ??), just undo the plug a little and let a it drip for a while, or remove all the oil and refill.

It only takes a very small change in oil level to alter the illuminated segments on the display - you may have only been 50ml from losing another segment so dont assume you are heavily overfilled; and remember the oil reading should be taken with the oil at temperature and after a few minutes of inactivity, not when cold first thing in the morning.

As the car is only 6 months old I'd be inclined to call in at your OPC - unless it's 50+ miles away(which mine is!!). They'll do it in a jiff & do it right. At the least give them a call regarding the oil plug seal. I've found the guys I use at Solihull to be very helpful. They even reckon they change engines FOC out of warranty(and not even extended) if the intermediate shaft oil seal goes!!

Thanks mate. Just tried to drain a little out and couldn't get underneath without ramps so looks like I'll have to take into my OPC. Reading is about 13 miles from me. I'm just a little worried about CAT damage which is why I've tried to do the job at home. I started it briefly this morning to move and no smoke came out. I guess I don't have any choice but to drive it in to my OPC!

How likely is CAT damage over short mileages or are we talking more severe overfills coupled with aggresive driving?

Well took my car into Reading OPC (keeping the revs low) and a friendly mechanic took the car away for 30 mins and drained off 500 mls and all is well! No charge and very friendly helpful service! So don't hassle if you overfill your car!
