550 spyder gear knob replacement

Since there seems to be a few 550 anniversary spyder owners on here I thought I'd pop a question to you - has anyone had any cause to replace the short shift gear knob? There's nothing wrong with the way mine works but it's really badly scratched - I guess the previous owner wore more rings than Jimmy Saville!
I enquired at OPC for a replacement and was told Porsche don't hold this part in stock and they would have to get one specially made for me - at a cost of circa £550 !!
That seems a bit far fetched to me and hence won't be ordering one!
Wondered if anyone else has had a similar experience - or would know where to get one from that doesn't cost an arm and a leg?
Cheers,

My car has only 7.5K but there are light scratches on the gear knob, again most probably from the original Lady owner's rings. If I was to the point of replacing it I think the best option would be to respray the original, as it's only a metallic silver finish. Granted this would paint out the black gear numbers etc but they could be put back in with a small paint brush then T-cut the surface, buff clean and lacquer, thus giving you a new gear knob for little money and something to do until the bright sunny evenings come round.

All the best

Colin
