5th Gear Crunching !!!

Hi all,

I've recently sold my Boxster and just purchased a 2006 997 4S Cab from Porsche Hatfield. It's got 23k miles on it. I've only had the car a week and am thoroughly enjoying it. It's a fairly high spec car with the X51 power upgrade, with the Sports Shortshift gear change and PCCB, Chrono etc plus a host of other options.

So far everything thing seems ok. This is with one exception. When the engine is cold and for about the first 15-20 mins of driving, every time I change up into 5th or down from 6th to 5th I get quite a crunch selecting the 5th gear. Is this normal with the Sports Shortshift, or is it something else?

Would appreciate some of your expert advise and opinions please.............

cheers,Mike

Nor me, I get a clunk as it goes in- when cold but thats just a mechanical movemnt type sound.
Certainly not a crunch...
Does it still do it when warm?

As I recall from the short shift days it was only 1st and 2nd that could be a bit "sticky" when cold.

Thanks chaps for all your help and responses. It seems fine after the car has been run for about 15 mins. Just feels and sounds like when you haven't depressed the clutch properly.

The car has the standard OPC two years warranty on it. I'm assuming its an engine out and gear box strip down to fix the lazy synchro suggestion that "scruff" mentioned? [8|]

cheers, Mike

I guess there is another possibility that the gear change cables may be in need of (slight) adjustment?

now that's interesting you should mention adjustment................ because I've just dropped the car off at Hatfield to get a roof rattle sorted and a couple of other minor other things. I mentioned this 5th gear problem and they introduced me to their chief expert who said exactly the same thing. He said that there was "some" adjustment he could make that might sort this problem out. He wasn't convinced it was the synchro's because of the low milage and that they see very few gear box issues on the 997 ..........

I did notice that during my blat across Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire to Hatfield this morning that pausing in the "gate"before changing up helped. I'm picking the car up on Friday so will provide an update after then .................oh well here's hoping.............. once again, thanks to everyone for all your help, suggestions etc ........ really appreciated [:)]

cheers
Mike

But if it was a cable adjustment you'd expect the problem to remain throughout the drive and not disappear once the gearbox oil has warmed up.

Update "¦"¦"¦..

OPC Hatfield contacted Porsche GB regarding my comment about this 5 th gear problem. Porsche GB immediately advised them to remove the gearbox and investigate the problem. Hatfield found slight damage to two gears. Porsche Hatfield was given the go-ahead to replace it with a new box.........

Absolutely stunning support from Hatfield. They provided me with a brand new Cayman while they repaired mine and couldn't have been more helpful "¦ Now looking forward to driving it as have only owned it a month...... collect it next Saturday ...........[:)]

Thanks MikeB and all ...........

Just got back off a business trip on Saturday and collected the car from OPC Sat morning. All seems ok, bit stiff selecting first and second for a while but I understand this is normal for the Shortshift and a new box....... Now looking forward to driving the wee beasty.

Off to Holland and then from Holland down to southern France in two weeks, really looking forward to it. Thanks again for all your advise etc [8D]

Cheers Mike

Really pleased at the successful outcome and good service you received - there is hope yet![;)] Enjoy the trip into Europe - and the short shift is a bit sticky in 1st/2nd until it warms up!

Thank you Captain [8D] ......... yep OPC Hatfield have always looked after me. I read your earlier thread about the sticky 1st and 2nd so wasn't worried yesterday when I drove her .....

cheers, Mike

Enjoy the trip Mike...[:)]

The short shift comes alive as the car/gearbox gets warm[8D]
