65-77 CD UNIT WANTED

Has anyone got or knows of a 1965 to 1977 3 pin Porsche CD Unit for sale at reasonable money? Preferably in known working order.

I'm not trying to be funny but I don't think they had CDs in the late seventies. My first (and one of the earlier) CD players (a Marantz thing that cost me £350) for inside the house was bought around 1985...

Presuming that you mean CDI unit, talk to Bob Watson, 911 Turbo Register technical guru ( 01869 340814 ); he has a guy who repairs them for sensible money.
Also, if you search through these threads, this matter has been addressed before.
Good luck.

Paul - I am referring to the Capacitative Discharge unit that provides the spark on 911's after 1968. Guess I should call it a CDI unit although not sure what the i stands for. Thks anyway.
John - Many thks for referring me to Bob Watson. I'll give him/them a ring sometime but I am not in any great hurry as I have one in on loan at present. Many thks for replying.
As a matter of interest to others it does appear from various comments and a bit of research that its not worth trying to run the early 2 litre engines on the original battery driven coil set up. Too much plug wetting and general misbehaviour. A pity if one is into originality but there you are - needs must.

Thanks to all you guys who answered. Sorry to be slow with this post. Have found a good Porsche CDI from eBay USA off a 911T and its working fine on my 65 car. Did'nt cost too much either. There's lots of parting out going on over there. BTW I echo Nick Moss's comment - ditch the original coil system - a good fat spark sorts out the plug fouling etc etc etc.

You also find NEW spark boxes at Mittelmotor in Germany for about 295 euros and three times nothing for postage. see www.mittelmotor.de

In Leicester, there is a friendly chap with an italian import 2.2 targa who repairs these things on his kitchen table. Send an email to Tim (username impmad2000 at www.ddk-online.com) and he mght be able to help you.

(if I beat him to this post [;)][:D][:D][:D])

Thanks 'Bert'. Having taken the back off my CDI to clean/inspect I see lots of little widgets all wired together and the thought that the unit is coming on for 40 years old indicates future failure in use is a distinct possibility. Have filed the reference to Tim and its sure to be useful - but not too soon I hope..
BTW Permatune also do a replacement 3 pin CDI (I think they were also an OE supplier to Porsche at the time) which their blurb states replaces the original Bosch unit 227-200-001. Its all new inside and they say it bolts up and plugs into the same location as the original. They call it 'Model 911 Ignition module'. Link here isl www.perma-tune.com/P-Porsche-911.html and this also covers suppliers, which include Mittelmotor in Europe.
