6K Service stamp needed?

My car had it's 24K service last August, so is due a service again. It's only done around 4K miles in the last 12 months (I know: must try harder[:(]), so I don't think it needs another big service, but it does need an oil change at the very least. Of course it's had plenty of money spent on it for other unscheduled maintenance. Question is, should I book it in for a 6K (oil change) service thus getting the important stamp in the book, or do the oil change myself but sans stamp in book? I don't mind spending the money, but oil changes are something I've done myself previously. And I'd probably use better oil. I guess the issue is that of full stamped service history or not.

What does everyone else do?

I should add that I'm not planning on selling the car any time soon, it's a keeper as far as I'm concerned.

 
I do my own oil, oil filter and air filter change every year and put the car into the garage for a full service every other year. In addition to the service book I keep a spread sheet on everything that gets done to the car in chrononological order so that I can keep a record of all the non-service maintenance items that you don't expect to see in the service book.
 
Very similar to what I do ..but I use a pen and paper for its "every item fitted maintence record" but I keep it away from the wife as it would give the game away as to why the recession is allegedly getting better [;)]
 
Thanks for the replies, confirms my own thinking. That's the approach that I used to take with my 944s, doing what I could myself and documenting everything in a binder, and taking it to my local independent (Tom Ferguson) for the tricky stuff and main belt change service. Again, it wasn't the cost of the service that made me question myself, which is small beer in the overall scheme of running/maintenance costs, more the missing official stamp.

How do you find Fergussons? Are they good for air-cooled models?

Hi Chris,
Yes, Tom is good with the air-cooled cars, along with the 944 series they've been his mainstay for many years. I took both of my 944s to him for 6+ years and more recently the 964.

Would be good to compare notes some time. Do you ever get to the regional meetings?

To be honest I havent attended a regional meeting yet. I really should pay up for membership and take full advantage (sorry !). I have however been to a Skid Car Day with the folks of the NE Region and they are a good bunch!

Dont suppose you know anything about warped brake discs do you, while im on? I get a bit of steering wheel vibration braking lightly from higher speeds. Lower speeds and sharp braking is fine.

Yes, I'll be going to Raby as usual, so will come and say hello. Re the suspected brake discs - I had that on my 944T seemingly through lack of use. I don't know the history of your car, whether the discs are old or new, and whether the car has not been used for a while (guessing you've only recently bought it). If some spirited driving doesn't sort it out then you're probably looking at either skimming them or replacing them

Chris, Judder/vibration caused by warped discs is very rare. The judder on mine was resolved by having the wishbone bushes changed.
 
That all depends if you track you car or driver very hard on the brakes and the discs warp ..happened to me after two track days a few years ago ..discs warpped and had to changed to fix the vibration issue . W-bushes were all new.
 
No tracking of the car, as only owned for 2 1/2 months so far and havent had the chance. I dont think the previous owner tracked either. The car had been sat for a few months though.

The vibration only seems to appear when braking lightly for higher speeds. Nothing noticed hard braking around town.

That's the opposite experience to me Ian. I was getting lots of judder on track on newish discs and original bushes. Judder went away completely when the bushes were changed and am still using the same discs.
 
A small amount of vibration can be something as simple as incorrectly torqued wheel nuts. Uneven pad deposition on the brake disc (especially after a trackday using road pads) can also lead to vibration/judder. For those that think they have warped discs, this article is worth a read:
