70 miles for no other reason than fun

I'm just back from a 70 mile jaunt round the beautiful villages and back roads of Essex. Round the Rodings, Matchings and on to Finchingfield and beyond. Roof down, cold air helping the engine sing, the car positively dancing down the roads. 70 miles for no reason other than being utterly engrossed in the cars abilities. Not once did my thoughts stray to depreciation, stone chips, oil leaks, or even the cost of 2 new rear Yokos (which I need desperately). The only things on my mind were the road ahead, this years club events, and roof down days out with my good lady next to me and a picker-nick in one of the boots.

Ladies and gentlemen, I truly hope you enjoy your cars as much as I enjoy mine. [:)]

Carl,

I did just that recently too.Wonderful in my spankers new "S",until I was nearly home......and I found out that birds are truly "bird brained".

Enter from stage left a large pheasant whilst I was at 40mph.......

result?

1/ Lunch.

2/A big hole under my bumper where there was a false air intake....now its a real one.

Car's off to the local OPC on Tues for some tlc.

Bu**er!

Cheers,

Buzz.

I get pheasants, rabbits and occaisionally deer.

The rabbits will normally get out of the way or stay put if you use dipped beam, using main beam confuses them.
The deer will get out of the way as long as you don't dazzle them.
For both of these you just need to slow down a little to let them get out of the way.

However, pheasants are a different matter. There is clearly nothing in their head.
They will look, see you coming, then step straight in front of you, day or night. They cross main roads when cars are passing.
There is no easy solution to avoiding them, since they are devoid of any form of self preservation.

Another thing to watch out for is bird swooping out of the hedgerows.
I also get mice/voles running about in the road, but these are not much of a hazard.
I've also seen crows and squirrels squashed. I don't know how the squirrels get hit.

It's not easy to avoid all the animals.

I've experienced the Kamikaze pheasants too. They fair explode when you hit them full on. [] I also had a rabbit head-butt one of my rear brake disks - at least thats what it sounded like [&:]

Carl,

Sounds great. Enjoyed the sunshine this morning (Sunday) too. Wrapped up, set the heater to 25C, hood down and off for a wee tour of some of Berkshire's and Surrey's roads. Brilliant.

Carl,

Great choice of roads. A group of us (from another forum) can often be seen on Sunday morning around the some of the areas that you mention. You might recognise a couple of these areas (particularly the last two pictures) by clicking this link:

Wow - some rather tasty machinery there jeddob. Bet a few heads swivelled when that convoy went past [:)].

I recognise Finchingfield straight away, and is that North Weald I see in some of the pics?

We have some fabulous roads near us - they were obviously built specially for Porsches [;)]. It just struck me today, I've had my car for a exactly a year, and I've racked up over 10k miles - virtually all of them on the back roads around Essex/Herts/Suffolk!

Yes, we certainly turn a few heads; especially the F360 Challenge Stradale which sounds fantastic. We do the route quite regularly but not when the weather is like it is at the moment. Yes, you are right about Finchingfield and North Weald.
