718 Base Cayman - Tyres/Wheel alignment

Hi

Now Autumn approaches I will have to finally bite the bullet regarding tyres.

The rear tyres display different wear rates. The nearside is about worn out, the offside just 40% worn. This was caused by a non repairable puncture to the nearside rear which required replacement. This happened with the previous owner and he just replaced the nearside. I think the Porsche "rule" is to replace both tyres if wear is more than 30%. Am I correct? I'm reconciled to replacing both anyway but thought I would ask.

The other issue is alignment. My local OPC reported that the alignment at the rear is OK, but the fronts are out for both toe and camber. If I'm having new tyres fitted I will probably ask for an alignment check/adjustment. Can anybody recommend a good place for alignment work in the West Kent/South London area? The quote from my local OPC was £360.

Thanks

i always replace tyres in pairs on the same axle

Plenty of other places can read and adjust alignment for a lot less than £360

Hi Alan,

For Porsche’s 111-point check they specify a minimum tread depth of 3mm, so if you have more than that on the offside tyre then strictly speaking there’s no need to replace it. However, it’s always good practice to change both tyres on the axle especially on a performance car like your Cayman.

As said, you should be able to get a full alignment check for considerably less than your dealer will charge. I’d ask for recommendations on your Regional part of the forum. Maybe a Porsche Independent in your area can help?

Jeff
