718 corroded cat to manifold nuts/bolts

My 718 as just had a Vehicle Health Check at a Porsche Centre, and have been told the 'cat to manifold nuts/bolts are corroded and need to be replaced, this includes replacing gaskets.
My question is : On a car only just 3 years old, with very low miles, is this work necessary ? If not covered by my warranty, should I leave the work until it becomes a problem !
Any input, will be appreciated.
 
IMHO Porsche will only replace them with like for like fittings, and you will be in the same position in a few years time. (the Porsche exhaust fittings are very poor)

I would get them replaced with stainless or titanium studs & nuts at a Porsche independent if you can.

Porsche centre looking for work, they always look far worse than they actually are. Take Andy's advice if keeping car long term.

 
Thank you both for your replies. I have decided not to have the work done yet, for now, leave the nuts and bolt alone, until going with your idea Andy !

 
Have they confirmed you can’t get them done under your warranty? If the OPC have said this work is not covered by warranty then complain to Porsche UK.

 
Not totally relevant to a 718 but...

My previous Porsche was a 2009 987.2 2.9 Cayman, I was made aware at a service that the exhaust flange bolts were corroded but chose to ignore it with the intention of changing them myself. At a subsequent hillclimb event my enthusiastic start caused all six bolts to crumble letting exhaust separate from the manifold. I was able to effect a temporary fix but it still led to a very noisy drive home!

When I bought my current 2011 987.2 Cayman S in 2018 one of the first jobs I had done was replacement of all six bolts and the gaskets. This was done at a Porsche specialist and cost under £200. This week my Cayman was in at the local OPC for the PDK transmission oil and clutch fluid replacement. One of the advisories given was that the exhaust flange bolts were again showing signs of corrosion.

They quoted the following (make sure you're sitting down)...

01014424 x6 £723.07.

90091000303 x6 £15.26.

99711111300 x2 £13.30.

To be fair I didn't discuss it with them so I don't know whether that included any PCGB discount, or labour, or whether they are mild steal or solid gold. I'll either change them myself or send the car to the Porsche specialist again.

 
Hi, Following on from the last post. After purchase I took my 987.2 3.4 PDK Boxster S to a local Porsche specialist for a check over. Various minor issues were found and sorted but particularly they recommended removal of the exhaust studs and replacement with new bolts & gaskets even though they were not leaking, corrosion was evident. They told me it was a very common source of problems so I had it done for about £250.00 + Vat.

This was the survey report:

On the health inspection we also found the Rear Exhaust Studs to be rotten as usual. Although we advised on these as they're common to see and we have seen them in worse conditions, we cannot give a length of time as to how long they will last before the exhaust starts blowing at the Manifold to CAT Joint. To heat up and drill out the rotten exhaust studs and to replace with stainless steel nuts & bolts. Labour is usually 3-4 hours so an average of 3.5 has been used for the basis of this quote.

This thread would reinforce that it is worth doing on older vehicles. Bad news if its not a warranty item on newer cars.

My 981S has corroded Exhaust flange bolts (most do) and I've lived with it for a couple of years now as they were marked as amber warning at the last service. But on a recent recall last week I asked about them again, and was told not to panic but they will need doing at some point and to sweeten the deal they discounted it to £495.00 all in, but did explain that they will go again as the materials are designed to move slightly as the engine moves under torque and soft metal is required (??). Although tempted I'll still leave it for now.
