718 series cars for EU/UK to end in July 2024?

So what's the news on the street with regard to the 718 series in the UK, does anyone have any info?

On first glance it seems they will have to be discontinued due to the new regulations that come into force in July 2024 regarding ISA (Intelligent Speed Assistance) and all the data monitoring that goes with it. This won't apply to RoW cars so I guess the US etc can continue to receive Caymans and Boxsters. But what about us here in the UK - are we going to get nothing two-seater shaped after July until the new electric sports car arrives?
 
Presumably a relatively simple extension to the facilities provided already on modern vehicles, so I had assumed it wouldn’t be a showstopper for most manufacturers. The driver can override ISA so not sure why that would be problem for drivers either.
 
A couple of issues. Traffic sign recognition is not infallible on my 2022 car and if involved in an incident it’s just more data collection.

There's quite a lot to it, so if it was easy I would have thought Porsche would have implemented it by now given that the regulations came into force in 2022 for new type approvals. As they haven't, and the 2024 deadline is approaching, I'm thinking they've decided it's not worth the investment cost???

Recently when I enquired about 718 CGTS availability at Hatfield I was told by an SE that I know well that the GTS is on run-out supply now Dave, with production ending around May 2024 … presumably for UK cars?

I believe that Porsche’s plan is to continue production of the ICE cars in parallel with the EV, maybe at Osnabrück, but we’ll have to wait and see what transpires.

That's my understanding too, Jeff, but as of late I'm starting to think that ICE production in parallel to EV will be for non-EU/UK only...
 
As an aside, do any new Porsche models have ISA e.g. the recently released updated Cayenne?
 
I’ve no idea Dave, but I would have thought it sensible to incorporate ISA on the latest Cayenne even if it’s not yet activated and assuming this could be carried out by the dealers? More to the point is the ICE Macan which, like the 718 Cayman and Boxster, will be produced in parallel with the EV version for a while. I think that it was revised some time ago and I’m wondering if the ISA regulation gives a dispensation for cars which haven’t been updated within a given time-frame [pre-2022?], which means that 718 production could continue to be sold in the UK in its current form? What happens with the Macan should give us a lead when the EV is announced early next year before the 718’s EV replacement.

As Brian has noted above it wouldn’t be difficult to implement ISA on the 718-series cars because the elements are there: GPS, camera, electronic throttle, CAN bus system. There’s plenty of space on the centre console for the ISA ‘cancel’ button, and a software update probably would be an adaptation of that used on other Porsche cars. It all depends upon whether or not Porsche reckon it’s worth the development time and expense if ISA implementation is necessary.

It looks like the latest Cayenne has all the right bits, looking at this press release it mentions a speed limiter:

I guess the 718 has had adaptive cruise control available on some cars so all the bits should be there too. I'm not they'll have an overall override button, I thought the idea was you can only do that via the accelerator pedal once the system kicks in?

My main interest is how are they going to adapt the system for GT cars and track use.....
 
Even easier if ISA deactivation is via the electronic throttle then Dave, and I’m not sure that active cruise control is necessary; just GPS [via the satnav?] and traffic sign recognition [via the camera?] should be sufficient, the former being a standard feature and the latter being an option on the 718.

ISA will feature on the soon to be released 992.1 whose electrical systems can no doubt be traced back to the 9X1-series cars and therefore the 718, so I wouldn’t have thought that incorporating ISA on the 718 would present a major challenge.

Since all the Porsche sports cars are ‘track ready’, surely it’s not just the GT cars which will require an ISA override for track use? Maybe the GPS will be used to recognise that the car is at a race track and ISA will be disabled? I’m sure that Porsche - and other sports car manufacturers - will have addressed the issue.

I have no faith in that Jeff given the amount of times I've had a call from Vodafone regarding my tracker when at circuits [:mad:]
