...in Nice to be precise, after attempting the col de Turini. Looks like the exhaust has had it but man with more knowledge than me (this could be donkey to be honest) has suggested it might be corroded heat exchangers? Either way, it sounds like a Nova with a hole in the exhaust and sits in a cloud of smoke at the traffic lights.

Can anyone let me know if its unlikely to be serious and can be driven back to the UK (unlikely, I know)?

If not does anyone know where I can get it fixed in Nice or nearby? Google isnt helping, I dont speak French and the bird has flown home...

I`ll shout any legends who can help a beer or two at classics at the castle!

Hi Graham, Sorry to here you've got problems[:(]

Rusty heat exchangers won't make it noisy, they are just shrouds to pick up the heat off the downpipes. If the pipes themselves are rotted through then it will certainly make a row!

Smoke could just be oil dripping from the rockers covers. Is it smoking out of the exhaust pipe our just generally wafting smoke about from the back?

If it's smoking heavily out of the exhaust pipe then you may have a engine problem, broken piston ring, or even a holed piston.

Can't help on a garage for you, my reply will keep it at the top of the lists so maybe someone will help.
Good luck[;)]

The noise could be the exhaust flange gaskets, probely best not to drive it to far! If it is flange gaskets its not to bad to do Regards Berny.

Theres a Porsche main agent in Nice and one in Antibes .........theres a Classics Porsche Garage in Mougins , very near Cannes, will understand the early cars better...........................sounds like gasket between h/ exchangers and silencer .......unless silencer actually blown a rivet out ...................nothing terminal but dont go further than u have too

Good luck

Thanks for all those replies guys - hopefully the sun will shine and the view on the beach will make life a little sweeter...

The car train is full so I'll limp over to Mougins. I'll let you know how I get on.
