80% Boxster "S"

Test drove a 350 SLK today, which was descibed, by one of the magazines, as being about 80% as good as the current Boxster "S" in most areas, and if you prefer the SLK looks and trick roof then it's probably your sort of car and how it drives and handles etc is probably good enough for most owners ..... Well for once I would say the journo has got it about right because as good as the new SLK is compared to the current competition I would have to say my Boxster "S" still feels, goes, sounds and even IMO looks at least 20% better in all the cruicial departments. I say looks better because I still find the SLK a bit on the small /cute side

The demo car was running on 18" wheels with sport suspension and the ride quality was definitely way below my 18" shod standard suspension example. I know on paper the SLK is quicker but surprisingly it didn't feel it on the road and I immediately noticed how much livelier and sportier sounding the Porsche felt when I jumped back into it and took off with my curiosity totally satisfied. As the article concluded everytime a 350SLK owner sees a Boxster "S" go by he will know the owner of the Porsche is driving the better car [;)] I AGREE 100% but would add the new SLK has absolutely nothing in common with the original apart from the trick roof concept.

Seems a few think the same - my father took his C class to dealer this week for recall work (seatbelt ), and had a good look around the SLK

His conclusion :- ''very wide at the back, quite narrow at the front. Seems to taper in horizontally and vertically at the front. If were my money would go for the Boxster, even if it is 8 years old''

He doesn't like Porsches either ! [:D]

I saw my first new SLK recently, and I think it loks hideous. This "formula 1" look nose that Mercedes is pushing would look better on a Thunderbirds toy car, and I also think it will date very quickly. Not for me!

I've literally just got back (yesterday) from a trip out to the Mercedes Bremen Factory to pick up a mate's new SLK. OK so it was only a 200, but my share of the 600 or so miles back gave chance to compare to my 2.7 Boxster. No contest (though a better comparison would be with a 350). To make you laugh, the Mercedes guy handing over the car even tried to tell me that I should consider an SLK because the roof's better than a boxster - who buys a car because of that !

In conclusion if you want something to drive, buy a Boxster; if you want to be seen in something flashy but aren't bothered about going round corners, buy the Merc.

(In it's defence the kit inside is extremely well integrated and thought out - the Sat Nav was a joy - I now see the value in having one).
