84 Lux Dash board

Hi

Typically the dash board on my Lux has more exposed cracks than a building site.

Other than that scratch built beauty of a dashboard [:'(][:'(] on ebay a month or so ago, I've not seen anything suitable, so I thought that the overlay as sold by Porsche Shop, below, might be a viable option.

What are your thoughts?

Is it worthwhile or is it better to get an original from a breakers, but then what would that take to fit? And how long?

If you can find a dash at a breakers, then it's worth doing the swap out. There's a good guide to dash replacement on 924.org, in the tech section

It took two of us the best part of a day to do this swap in a 924S - although I'm sure we'd be quicker the next time round.

Crack free dashes are so rare now, I wouldnt bank on finding one. Even 10-15 years ago when I was heavily involved with the cars, you could only bank on finding a decent dash in a 924S: now, virtually all of these are in the same state. Another equaly rare find would be the black ( black and shiny) dash out a a base model 924. These came without sunroof, tinted glass, electric windows or rear wiper and the dash was far hardier. I have seen a number of these parts and they were all still in excellent condition even when 924S parts were cracking with age...

If you decide on the dash cover, which isnt that bad, then itll be cheaper from Anne & Tony Watson.

I was wondering about trimming my dash. Maybe cover it in some flexible leatherette, or possibly if its not wildly expensive paying someone to do it.

I'd suggest that the best early-dash, kept in an hermetically-sealed enironment, will be thinking about cracking as soon as you spend a day installing it.

It's a worry, as the oval-dashes are going the same way at a rate. Not an alarming rate, yet, but it's going to happen to us all. The leather kits from the States look a better option if you're keeping the car. Are they available for an early-dash? And, in RHD [8|]

i have only ever had one black dash that had no cracks or blemishes and i sold that for £125 to some nutter.

I would honestly look at retrimming but even this can be problematic. A straight forward exchange of dashes would take a beginner a day but i can do it now in under 2 hours with no glitches.

A company in america trim dashes in leather but it aint cheap.

The covers dont give the finish that i would be happy with but they will provide a stop gap and you could always flog it on ebay and probably recoup at least 75% of your cost.

if i remember the company for retrimming i will post link.

Youll find a better picture here; and a better price.

Mine is starting to crack up Paul... California Sun perhaps [&:]

Id considered one for my 924S. They look alright: far better than American carpet covers, but not as good as a new dashboard. I have a perfect dash which Ive decided to fit into that car, otherwise Id buy one. I see the cars as they are though and not everyone agrees with me.
