86 911 stonechipping?

Can anyone tell me if the front, rear and side valance panels including the sill covers are stonechipped when they were painted at the stuggart factory. I'm about to get my car professionaly painted after 5 months welding and replacing sills, kidney bowls, door slam panels wings, to mention a few but now as this very close to painting it, the guy in the bodyshop has asked me what needs to be stonchipped. All the old stuff has been taken off and all panels are now in primer waiting for my decision.

As I'm new to this world of porsche, could someone please advise me how they were done originally?

thank you

Derek

The front lower valance (complete), sill covers and rear lower side panels (masked to a line meeting the bottom of the bellows) are stone chip primed. The rear valance and front and rear bumpers are not. In addition, the wheelarch lips have stone chip applied with a narrow paint roller. Hope that's what you want. Have you considered fitting wheelarch liners if the car is in bits?

Thanks for replying. wheelarch liners? excuse my ignorance, but were are these available from and are these the plastic wheel arch protectors on modern cars we are talking about?

The wheelarch liners are available from "Lokari" in Germany, 260 Euros for four. Unfortunately they are alluminium, not plastic as on modern cars and I understand that they are a bit of a 'mare to fit, so best done before the car is put back together. In my professional experience, the fitting of wheelarch liners to modern cars was MUCH better than the invention of sliced bread! I might try to put some feelers out to component suppliers to see if anyone is willing to comission the production of plastic liners for our favourite car....anyone out there listening who could help???

Chris I thought about putting Lokari wheel arch liners on a few years ago but after reading a few horror stores fitting them I did not bother but If you can find someone to make them in plastic I think you would have them clamming at your door

Graham, I paid a visit to a restoration specialist this afternoon to discuss something else, but conversation soon turned to wheelarch liners. He has a knack of getting stuff made that the market is craving, so I suggested they would be a hot seller in plastic. He's going to look into it, so I'll drop him a note to remind him. As you say, we'll beat a path to his door if he comes up with the goods!

I would say I would have a set if they get made.. but I expect they will only be done for the narrow body.

No doubt others will answer the bit other bits - just a quick tip - now your car is in primer take the following action to avoid future stone chips showing up like a sore thumb. Why don't silver cars show stone chips like dark blue cars or reds etc? Its all down to the colour of the primer. Silver cars have grey or silver primer - as do all cars. So if your car is dark blue ask your spray shop man to add some of the top coat colour to the primer. Then next time you have a stone chip on the Dark Blue paint it wont show up like a silver sixpence! You blue primer should see to that![;)]

Afternoon....I'm a new member and having spotted Derek's thread wanted to ask a related point, if anyone can help. I have a few small chips and marks on the rollover and rear spoiler grill on my Targa. The black paint is anodised I guess, but wondered if anyone can point me towards a suitable black paint to touch in, without it looking to obvious...Thanks

+1 but again would need to be wide body. Ian

any luck with the plastic liners befoer I buy the metal ones. one their site it keeps defaulting to fiesta plastic ones for the front saying they are porsche compatable. anyone any knowledge about this?

Nothing yet. I've discussed the possibility of modifying 964 liners, as they should be a snug fit on the wheelarches (you wouldn't want them falling off....) but the underpinnings are so different that it is unlikely that they could be made to fit without major mods. Developing new will take much longer if ever the idea gets off the ground. Maybe we should discuss the matter with Locari? Bottom line is that if your car is ready to be re-assembled, go for what is already available. Sorry I can't give you better news!

Cheers for coming back to me, I'll email Lokari tomorrow to see if they can persue this. Would be interesting to see how many buyer we may be able to gather for a bulk purchase?

Good news! Plastic wheelarch liners now available from Specialist Vehicle Preparations in Worcestershire. I haven't seen an example yet, but Dom Delaney has developed them and his reputation would suggest a very thorough job has been done and all the potential pitfalls have been taken into account. Things that concerned me were fixings (you don't want to be drilling into bodywork), oil cooler efficiency etc., and these are mentioned in the write-up. Look on the home page of "ImpactBumpers.com" for early information and "specialistvehiclepreparations.com" for more details.

Of course the one slight problem with plastic liners on the later cars is that it's now a real PIA to access anything in the wheel arches, including oil tank, oil lines, oil cooler, aircon condensor, windscreen washer tank, and on the 993 lots of other bits including charcoal cannister, cam covers and rear mufflers, unless you have a lift. Never mind, think of all the good points.

Hi Chris, Just spoke to Dominic and he has them in production. They arent available for 2 weeks or so, but talking to him they sound very good. So I'll be ordering my set once he's ready to take orders. He says hes had a lot of enquires including trade people, so here's hoping, that he will make a good return on his time and efforts to get them made. Thank you letting me know about this and the other forum users as well should now be able to get them. regards Derek

The words sell and hot cakes spring to mind, cant believe these have not been available before now.

Hi All, Just spoke to Dominic and ordered my set of wheel arch liners. He has them in stock but only a few sets left, so anyone wanting a set should contact him quickly. Will put up some photos once I have them fitted.
