90 944 S2 running rough

Hi All,

Not seeking help this time, I've been having issues with my S2 unexpectedly losing power for 6-8 months. I had the AFM cleaned up which improved things but occasionally she'd revert back to her bad habits and not have enough power to pull the skin off the proverbial rice pudding! It started to happen more frequently of late and it seemed to be exacerbated by cold temps and I knew it wasn't the DME relay, having recently replaced that too. Long story short, I found an article that discussed similar symptoms that were cured by the replacement of the DME temp sensor, the throttle position sensor and the idle stabilisation sensor. I replaced all but the latter and, touch wood, my 944 has never run better.

Hope that helps?

Thats really useful. It prompted me to think that there probably a host of components which have all been fitted from new which could be replaced relatively easily (and cheaply?) and might be taking the edge off the performance. I've done a few on a fix on fail basis but maybe its time to get a list together?

My daily which is an Alfa 156 JTS throws up engine management faults if everything is not perfect so its been an object lesson in making sure everything is spot on. Time to apply the same logic to the 944 maybe.

its good that it’s sorted but a more staggered approach might have revealed the faulty componen, chucking a whole bunch of bits may have fixed but you don’t know what the issue was

these parts new from Porsche are quite expensive
idle control valve and TPS will cost more than £300

Hi,

Thanks for your responses, I left out that my son and I did some basic investigative work. It showed some anomalies in the TPS, but the temp sensor is probably re-useable, the resistance range goes from 4000 Ohms to single figures over a 100 deg C range, but not linearly. The new one hit the resistance values exactly, so just did a 1-4-1 swap. I spent less than £60 to procure both items, the TPS was from one of the usual Porsche breakers off a previously running car, and the temp sensor was available quite readily. I baulked at buying a replacement ISV, as they were definitely not cheap, so thought I'd leave that as a last resort.

I intend to open up the TPS and see if the problem is visible. I'll post again if I find anything out worth reporting.

Yours, Laurence
