901 Gearbox rebuild.

Should I attempt a 901 gearbox rebuild? At the weekend I managed to break my 1971 911T box. Something went bang when pulling away gently from a junction and it jammed in first, although it released after a ride on the transporter home. It let go shortly after completing a quick and rather punishing historic rally test, however I did manage equal fasted time. I'm fairly competent mechanic but haven't done a gearbox rebuild before. Should I attempt it or just take it out and hand it over to an expert?

Not sure where you're based but the generally accepted 'guru' of these boxes is Mike Bainbridge - his website is at:

Best of luck [:)]

I think you might need some special tools for a 901 box but as suggested contact Mike Bainbridge as he will talk you through what's involved and help you work out if it is something you want to do yourself.

[FONT=arial"]I've found the cause of my box sticking in first gear. It seems the nut holding the pinion shaft had worked loose allowing enough movement for the first/reverse gear slider to only engage on the last few millimetres of the gear. The gear teeth gave way when I was autotesting, the slider moved into the chipped teeth and locked the shift mechanism. I've been to see Mike today and I'm now looking at a rebuild requiring 1st Gear Slider, synchro & dog teeth. Its also damaged the pinion gear and probably needs new synchros on 2nd and 3rd. My problem now is to find a decent used pinion shaft and crown wheel. So if anyone can help me locate a decent pinion and crown wheel for a 911/901 "dog leg" box that would be great.
