911 2.4 s Good buy ?

Can anyone assist with a pricing question in that I have ben offered a 1973 911 2.4 s, which looks great on the pictures, Light Met blue, wider Fuchs, RS interior, but has an E engine which has been enlarged to 2.7 RS spec. Seller has all paper work and very recent bodywork. Is it worth £32K - £34 K, as non original engine but orig colour ?

Hi Tim

It's all down to the condition. Check for rust in all the usual places. If it's in good condition and not in need of any major work that would be a fair price.

Seems a lot for a Bitza car? Not a lot of the S left?
Non-matching numbers, modified engine (though the E engine is a really nice driver) but a rust free body is worth a lot. I grant you.

Graham.

( 73T + 3.2 + 7'' wide wheels etc and rust free, good patina = £16K insurance value by PCGB)

ORIGINAL: 911hillclimber

too low insurance value IMHO .... if you had to go out tomorrow to buy a rust free 73T which has been nicely modded I bet you wouldn't get one for £16K ..... and that's before considering the 3.2 engine.

Hope this helps the originator, but i think the price on the car(anycar) depends on the view of the buyer?

If someone came to buy thier first early 911 and was bent on originality at all costs, then that rarity has to be paid for.

If he is able to compromise, then the value is variable!

Is this worth 16K or 26K depends if you like the spec I think:

1973T fully welded, sills etc etc
3.2 engine and 5 speed oil cooler box
Turbo torsion bars rear, alloy rear arms, 2.7 Carrera roll bars.
Bilstiens all round, A caliper on the front, turbo rack/arms

Full interior, period race seats. No radio!

Removeable roll cage, converted to RHD (was German car)

Dage Sport 7'' 2 piece wheels with Fuch pattern centres.

220 bhp, 1000Kg and injected 33 mpg.

Hi. Is it Gemini blue and had the body work done at Sportwagon a few years ago? Sounds like a car I have seen and remember quite well. I know a little about the car if you want to PM me but I think pricing really boils down to what you are willing to pay as it is non std.

Regards

Get it inspected for rust by someone who knows and if it is sound and you like it, buy it. You wouldn't be able to build it for less.
Chasing originality is a will o' the wisp. If you are an originality freak, buy an Austin Allegro - much rarer than a Porsche and it doesn't cost as much.

Hi Yoda,
car was restored by Jaz in 06, was sold on Classic Chrome in 07 for £37k, Gemini Blue, could be ! Interior RS style with bucket seats.
Reg 723 BYK. looks good in pictures, but havn't seen or driven.
Main concern in parting with £33k is it worth it, as an original 911 2.4s is £50 - £60 K !
But if want to sell it is originality a big problem.

Thanks Tim

Hi Tim
Sounds like the same car ... mechanical overhaul by Jaz and body work by Bruce at Sport Wagon. When I saw the car, it looked very good from 10 ft but there were a few minor issues (bubbles, blemishes) close up. I understand the body was refurbished to a budget rather than getting the full going over so it will be interesting to see how it has held up after a few years. The car drove very well indeed, went like a rocket and beautifully set up. The colour etc was very nice and the overall finish good. I didn't buy it for the same reason that is bothering you - hard to value due to the mods.
Great car but hard to value i it will never be worth the same as a good std car but its probably more fun to drive and use.
Good luck.

hi Tim.....I have the reverse situation - in Aug 2008 I bought a 1969 E ( fabulous condition) with a 1972 2.4S engine ( could be the one you are missing! ) rebuilt to a race spec but still 2.4 capacity. Very hard to value but I paid considerably less than the money you are being asked. I did not bother with a pre purchase inspection but I would strongly recommend that you get one done for the few hundred pounds it costs and be prepared to either walk away or negotiate a reduced price if the inspection uncovers body or mechanical issues.

Rust is the killer.....if you can get underneath and prod away you may quickly find something you dont like but even then there are lots of hidden potential rust problems so its hard to say a car is rust-free !

As to price , well I am happy to see high prices being achieved , but the price the vendor paid in 2007 looks to be having too much of an influence here . Dont go over 30k ....if what you actually want is a 2.7RS Rep there are a few out there competing for your cash [;)]

Hi John. Hope you are keeping well.
Any links to the RS reps you refer to? Looked at a couple but not sen one I like yet for sensible money.
Regards

Hi Feroz !

I'm doing OK thanks and still doing trackdays in the 964RS and now in a 911E/S as well. Are you coming back into the fold or even coming to one of the curry nights I keep inviting you to ?[;)]

In terms of RS reps , if you look at Pistonheads you will find some from traders asking £36k+.
There is also a Welsh (Powys) RSR 'rep' at a more modest £30 k......but there are reps and there are reps, some are just body kits on stripped out 3.2 Carreras but I'm sure you know if you've been looking .
Nothing really good value that I saw , the cheapest example of something that the O/P might be interested in was this S recreation - http://www.classiccarsforsale.co.uk/classic-car-page.php/carno/60554

I dont know what your budget is but there was a lime green car that Nick Moss built that looked good , was up for 46k . It may have moved by now. It would have cost I guess at least 70k to build but drawback was not eligible for FIA papers / historic racing and hard to assess sell-on value as a trackday toy ....unlike a true RS.

Hi John

I am good thanks. Yes, looking for something to potter about in and perhaps do the odd trackday. Have two little ones at home now so time is short but it would be nice to go to a few events and turn up in som esuitable wheels.

Good to hear you are well and enjoying your cars. See you at a curry night soon (if its at Tayyabs!!).

Regards
